American Indian Report - September/October 2008 - (Page 14) E CO N O M I C D E v ELO PM EN T Planning for Economic Development By Michelle Tirado Before the enactment of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act in 1975, there was not a whole lot of economic development in Indian Country. What activity there was in tribal communities was planned by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. Look around. Much has changed over the last three decades. In their pursuit of self-determination and self-governance, tribes’ economic conditions and outlooks have considerably changed. Not only is there an abundance of activity — building and expanding casino-resorts and a wide range of other job-producing and revenuegenerating enterprises — but there is also a lot of strategic planning underway. Tribes are gathering resources within their own communities, and even reaching outward to create goals and visions that will lead to more robust and self-sustaining economies for generations to come. 14 September/October 2008 American Indian Report
