The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 29, visually addresses the complexities of being an American Indian in the modern world through a variety of artwork, such as pottery, stained glass, paintings, sculpture, quill work and black ash basketry. On opening day, artists Lois Beardslee (Ojibwa) and Yvonne Walker-Keshick (Odawa/Ojibwa) discuss their works and offer examples for sale to the public. OcTOBEr 6-8 The 5th Annual National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children Conference convenes in Salt Lake City, Utah. The event, organized by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, provides training on the latest research and best practice strategies for Drug Endangered Children efforts at the community, state and federal levels. It includes topics related to child welfare, environmental health, prevention, the judiciary and drug courts, substance abuse and mental health, continuum of care and topics specific to Indian tribes. OcTOBEr 9 Applications are due for U.S Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy Tomorrows Partnership for Children Program funding. The purpose of this program is to stimulate innovative community-based programs that employ prevention strategies to promote access to health care for children and their families. The award maximum is $50,000. OcT. 30-NOv. 1 Native students, teachers and professionals gather in Anaheim, Calif., for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society’s 30th National Conference and Career Fair. The event features a career fair, nationally recognized speakers, panel discussions and workshops. It also includes the 30th Anniversary Honors Banquet with Research and Professional of the Year Awards Presentations, held on Nov. 1. NOvEmBEr 10–13 The 18th Annual Indian Land Consolidation Symposium takes place at the Desert Diamond Casino & Hotel in Tucson, Ariz. This year’s theme is “Protecting Our Lands & Resources.” The symposium will focus on the importance of developing and implementing protective codes and ordinances. General sessions and break-out tracks will detail tribal models and initiatives that prevent land loss; establish fair and equitable rights of way; protect water resources; and promote land recovery.
