American Indian Report - September/October 2008 - (Page 7) Native American Music Awards Celebrates 10th Anniversary The Seneca Niagara Hotel & Casino in Niagara Falls, N.Y., will be alive with the sound of music on Oct. 4, when Native singers and instrumentalists gather for the 10th Annual Native American Music Awards (N.A.M.A.). Nominations, for more than 30 categories, were announced in August. Up for Record of the Year are Blackfire’s (Silence) Is A Weapon, Northern Cree & Friends’ Calling All Dancers , Thee Express’ Express Yourself, Golana’s Mirror Lake, , Brulé & AIRO’s Live At Mt. Rushmore and Blackfoot’s Train Train for Record of the Year. This year’s N.A.M.A. features more than 30 music categories. For a complete list of nominees, go to www. nativeamericanmusicawards.com. For tracks from the nominees and to vote, go to www.votenative.com. To commemorate N.A.M.A.’s 10th anniversary, there will be inductions into the N.A.M.A. Hall of Fame. Inductees include: Rickey Medlocke, current guitar- Janice Marie Johnson, performer and Hall of Fame recipient. ist of Lynyrd Skynyrd and founder, lead guitarist and songwriter of Blackfoot; Pat vegas of Redbone, an original founding member of the Native American rock group that reached the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1974 with the song, “Come and Get Your Love”; Janice-Marie Johnson, founder and principal songwriter of the internationally acclaimed group A Taste of Honey; and Felipe Rose, the “Indian” and co-founder of The village People. N.A.M.A. has two categories for music videos: long form and short form.
