Chickasaw scholars have little outlet for their work, and leading publishers have shown only limited interest. One way the tribe is addressing this is through the Chickasaw Press. Operating with support of the tribal government, it publishes books written by Chickasaw citizens and others. High School district. The initiative engages Native and non-Native students in positive experiences that build multicultural communication, understanding and friendships. Tsigo Bugeh Village Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico Restoring communal living through Pueblo-style housing, the Tsigo Bugeh Village offers “traditional living with a modern touch” for Ohkay Owingeh (formerly the San Juan Pueblo). The Village includes 40 units for single or multi-generational families, with amenities such as a community center, meeting space, kitchen area, weight room, computer lab and laundry room. Thanks to the financial education that it provides, delinquent payments have decreased from $112,000 in 1999 to $15,000 in 2008. community council Task Force Ak-Chin Indian Community, Arizona The Ak-Chin Indian Community established its Community Council Task Force to address the environmental, cultural and social impacts of hyperdevelopment on lands neighboring the reservation. The task force reviews development plans, permits and other relevant information related to threats to air and water quality and cultural resources.
