Far West Skier's Guide 2011-2012 - (Page 73)

Continued from page 40 In addition to skiing one of the great New Mexico ski areas, club members are also active throughout the year. Michelle and Christa participated on a Century (100 mile) bike ride this past spring with numerous other long distance cyclers. Ski Apache opened under the name of “Sierra Blanca Ski Resort” during Christmas of 1961. Thus, the resort is also celebrating its 50th Anniversary. We serve mostly the Northern and Central area of New Mexico with all clubs located in the Albuquerque area. Even though our clubs all have skiing in common, they each are friendly, vibrant clubs with their own diverse character and size of membership. This year, our clubs enjoyed several ski trips mostly in New Mexico and Colorado. Taos, Red River, Santa Fe, Telluride, Crested Butte, and Pagosa Springs, were all club organized trips with many sub-groups within the clubs tripping out to destinations far and wide. The New Mexico Cross Country Ski Club and the Sitzmarkers Ski Club are year round clubs and enjoy water skiing, boating, camping, softball leagues, back yard parties, and just hanging out together. Being a member of a FWSA ski club has many great benefits, including: group travel, the opportunity to race, receiving the Far West Skier’s Guide magazine, FWSA support to local clubs on local issues regarding insurance and legislation, and networking with other similar minded ski enthusiasts. If you have not yet found a ski club in the New Mexico area, please check out one of NEW MEXICO SKI CLUB COUNCIL these great clubs and join us on the slopes this winter, or at one of our other great outdoor adventures. The organization is the nation’s largest multi-sport, multi-disability organization serving more than 60,000 people nationwide. The Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project is in a partnership with Disabled Sports USA and its chapters, providing year round sports programs for severely wounded service members from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict and the Global War on Terrorism. Programs take place at sites throughout the US, offering Wounded Warriors the opportunity to integrate as participants and mentors in their home communities. There are 30 DSUSA Chapters within our FWSA area, many of them already receiving support from our ski clubs. Huge numbers of Wounded Warriors have been returning home to our FWSA communities. These disabled vets, who lost so much, can definitely use our help. We take them skiing. What a delight to see those great big smiles! FWSA councils have a long term relationship with several California Chapters of Disabled Sports USA: The Tahoe Adaptive Ski School (TASS) at Alpine Meadows, the US Adaptive Recreation Center at Big Bear (USARC), The Unrecables Ski Club in Los Angeles, and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra at Mammoth Lakes. One in 750 people has multiple sclerosis, a devastating, neurological disease in which a person’s immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord. There is no known cause or cure for MS. The Can Do Multiple Sclerosis Center is dedicated to improving the lives of people and families living with MS through its interactive, educational programs unique to any in the world. All of the Center’s programs are based on the philosophy that you can have a chronic condition AND have your health. By drawing on a wide range of medical professionals and focusing on all aspects of health - exercise, nutrition, social support and disease management - The Center helps people with MS learn how to live healthier, happier, more active lives. A wonderful way to help raise funds for the Can Do Multiple Sclerosis Center is participation with the Vertical Express. Times and locations are posted on their wesite.
