the Wounded Warrior Project, USARC's Peak to
Peak, ALS and St. Jude's.
The Unrecables of Los Angeles Council is
the Los Angeles Chapter of Disabled Sports
USA. This ski club was a surprise applicant
this year for the FWSA Charities Recognition.
It was unique in that DSUSA is a charitable
organization, and yet, The Unrecables decided
to "give back" to another charitable organization! This is really an amazing and wonderful
concept. Club members held a holiday event
for AbilityFirst, an organization that provides
a variety of programs to help people with disabilities. The Unrecables members could well
identify with and appreciate this group's
motto, "Looking beyond disabilities, Focusing on capabilities, Expanding possibilities"!
The club first held a Holiday Party
Movie Night pot luck in conjunction with a
Toy Drive for their own members. About 30
members attended - bringing many toys to donate to their favorite new charity. The club
bought some additional toys, and a week later
several Unrecables members, wearing happy
Santa hats, delivered the toys to AbilityFirst in
Inglewood. Many smiles on beautiful faces, as
club members presented the gifts to kids, who

don't really have much to celebrate during the
holiday season. The Unrecables felt the warm
holiday spirit, being able to share with others.
The club is very thankful to Sempra Energy
and Melody McCullough, who financially and
in person, assisted them with this wonderful
holiday giving event. During the ski season,
the Unrecables offer scholarships to all members. The purpose of this program is to assist
students, as well as, instructors financially on
trips and other activities. The Scholarship Program gets funded by individual donations, ski
club donations, the Ralphs Community Contribution Program, and AmazonSmile. The
club skis at Mammoth Mountain one weekend
a month during the winter months and provides all the necessary equipment. Mammoth
sponsors these weekends by giving The Unrecables free lift tickets, but instructors and students still have the expense of trip lodging,
transportation and meals. Many members
were approved for scholarships this ski season,
enabling them to participate in our trips and
enjoy skiing!

The Far West Ski Foundation is the fund
raising sister organization to FWSA. The
foundation was originally established to support training for alpine racing. It expanded
on that mission to raise funds and offer
grants in four mission areas: Scholarships
for under - 20 alpine racers, scholarships and
wounded veteran support to enable the disabled to enjoy adaptive snowsports, support
to Women's Ski Jumping, especially scholarships for the development training of its Fly
Girls, and support for the preservation of museums and historical snowsports. To learn

Many FWSA ski clubs enjoy being involved with Special Olympics, whose mission is to provide year-round sports training
and athletic competition in a variety of
Olympic-type sports for children and adults
with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical
fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy
and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and
friendship with their families, other Special
Olympics athletes and the community.

Another FWSA favorite organization is
Disabled Sports USA, whose mission is to
provide national leadership and opportunities
for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through
participation in community sports, recreation

Can Do MS is another charity close to
FWSA's heart. One of FWSA's major awards
is named after its founder, Jimmie Heuga. Can
Do MS leads the way to empowering people
and families living with MS to transform and
improve their quality of life. Everything done
at Can Do MS is driven by one simple belief:
you are more than your MS. With a vision, a
mission and core values rooted in the legacy
and belief of Can Do MS founder Jimmie
Heuga, that everyone living with MS has the
power to live full lives, Can Do MS is the
start of a whole new way of thinking about
and living with Multiple Sclerosis.
