Far West Ski Association's 87th Annual Convention will be held June 13 - 16, 2019 in
beautiful Indian Wells, California, where the days are warm, and the evenings are cool, quiet
and relaxing. Our host for this event will be the Orange Council of Ski Clubs, with assistance
from the Los Angeles Council of Ski Clubs.
We will be staying at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, which provides the quintessential Palm Springs experience. Located in the exclusive community of Indian
Wells, the resort's outstanding hospitality and service allows for successful meetings and unforgettable leisure activities. Guests can enjoy championship golf, tennis, pools and award-winning spa facilities to relax, play and indulge.
Located 20 minutes from downtown Palm Springs, and the Palm Springs International
Airport, the Hyatt Regency offers a variety of beautiful indoor and outdoor event venues that
will motivate and inspire every guest.
Spacious guest rooms (530 non-smoking rooms) offer king and double queen rooms, plus
more than 70 suites and villa options. Dining at Lantana, the Roadrunner Café, or in the Agave
Sunset Tequila Bar will provide you with all the dining options you will need. The two PGAcaliber golf courses and soothing pools are part of the luxury getaway for guests at the Hyatt
Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa. Let all your stress melt away at the spa and show off your
bikini by one of the seven pools, some adult-only. A private Pool Party is planned for the convention at one of the pools. The 13th Annual Michael German Memorial Golf Tournament
will be held at the Indian Wells Golf Resort. This is the only 36-hole public golf facility that
holds the distinction of both courses being on Golfweek's Top 20 "Best Courses You Can Play" in
California.
Free Wi-Fi is available in guest rooms and social spaces, lobbies and restaurants, and complimentary on-site parking is offered as well. For those that enjoy outdoor exercise, the Resort
provides complimentary bicycle rentals. Additional information can be found at www.indianwells.regency.hyatt.com.
In the heart of prestigious Palm Desert, Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa is just
four miles from shopping and dining on El Paseo Drive. Enjoy nature at the Living Desert Zoo
and Gardens, three miles west. Get a new perspective from Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or
spend a day at Knott''s Soak City Water Park, both about a half-hour away. Come early and
stay late. It will be an event you'll be talking about for a long time. ss

This season ask yourself "What's Next?"
Last year, maybe you got to go to some great
resorts that you have never been to before.
Perhaps, you had some great powder days, or
met lots of new friends. Perhaps, you recently
got new equipment and you're looking forward to taking the next step forward by challenging yourself to ride the steep, go off piste,
or conquer a perfect mogul field. Or, maybe
your plan is to improve your ski technique, to
race, to try snowboarding, nordic skiing, telemarking, snowshoeing, or developing other
skills? Or, maybe your goal is to expand your
horizons and visit more resorts. After all, the
world has hundreds of beautiful ski venues all unique and worthy of creating new memories.
According to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) the average age of skiers is
38.5 years old and skis (or snowboards) less
than six days a year. We would like to think
that Far West Ski Association members are
way above average for days on the slopes.
NSAA conducts studies on many facets
of snowsports. According to long time and
recently past president of NSAA, Michael
Berry, "The person who skis the most in a given
year is 65 and older." He is referring to averages
for all skiers at all of the resorts who participated in a survey which included over 300 ski
areas. FWSA is a member of this Colorado
based organization. Friends of mine who are
seniors, and retired, are skiing dozens of days.
Let's investigate why there is more skiing in
this older, pardon me, more mature, category.
It is a combination of factors. Individuals
in this group often have more free time and
have more resources. In the past, health may
have interfered with folks in this age group,
notably problems with knees and hips. Advances in medicine have given new life for
older skiers with joint replacements along with
other advances. Improvements in ski technology makes skis, boots and poles lighter and better than ever. Whereas 180+cm skis were
common in the past, composite materials utilized in modern shaped skis makes them much
shorter, lighter and more responsive.
Other factors may include discounts
from ski operators on both day and season
