SAN DIEGO COUNCIL OF SKI CLUBS

by Chris Gill,
President

One cannot but notice the funloving members of the San Diego
Council of Ski Club's delegation
to the FWSA Convention held in
Boise, Idaho last June. Perhaps
their black and white outfits
helped to identify them? Love
those matching boas! Striking!

The mission of the San Diego
Council of Ski Clubs (SDCSC) is
to support and promote the sport
of recreational skiing, racing and
snowboarding through our local
clubs and the Far West Ski Association. The San Diego Council
is also very active in providing
international travel and adventure trips to bring its club members together throughout the year.
We currently have nine active clubs, with hundreds of
members belonging to one or
more clubs. Each club enjoys
year around activities and are
now doing joint club ski trips
during the ski year. Clubs enjoy
doing day trips down to Baja for
wine tasting, bus trips to the
Getty Museums or heading up to
Laguna Beach for the famous
Pageant of the Masters. During
the summer our clubs hold their
meetings outdoors and enjoy
BBQs and outdoor recreational
activities.
The San Diego Council has
started to hold a Council President and Club Presidents meeting. The purpose of the meeting
is to improve communications
between both organizations. The
78

first meeting was held last October, and was very successful in
addressing issues of club growth
and better information on FWSA.
The council is now in the process of holding these meetings
twice a year. Our next big step is
to update our current website.
We have been looking at several
options and we hope to have a
new website by 2018.
Our ski season started off
with the annual December Aspen
Ski Council Trip. We took 68
people and brought a large group
of new skiers from the Action Ski
Club. The SDCSC is, once again,
going to Aspen. This will be
our 19th year. We had a pre-trip
party sign up in June for the
December 2018 ski trip. So far,
we have 50 people signed up.
Don Diego and Torrey Pines
clubs combined a trip to Mammoth Mountain. While Mammoth
was blessed with record snowfall
this past season, there were times
when it was a challenge to get in
and out of the area. All that powder was welcome. One benefit to
all that snow was that we were
still able to ski well into the summer months. Action, North Is-

land, and Pacific Rim Alliance
went to Crested Butte, Big White,
Squaw Valley and Steamboat.
The San Diego Council
started off their international
trips this year in April. The
council took 41 people to
Provence, France. The pre-trip
was to Marseille, followed by
seven days on a barge in Provence. The group had two boats.
We biked from Aigues Mortes to
Avignon. We biked along the
rivers, vineyards and an awesome aqueduct at Pond Du
Guard. We then headed to the
Loire Valley via Epernay for
Champagne tasting. The group
then stayed in an exquisite
Chateau in Amboise. We toured
several other Chateaus, blended
our own wines and canoed down
the river in the pouring rain. Our
next trip was in August, 2017 with a pre-trip to Mestre and
Dubrovnik, and then we went to
Croatia to experience a Dalmatian Coast Cruise.
The Alpine Race League had
their annual banquet, and the induction of SDCSC 2017-2018 officers. They were: Christine Gill,
President; Tom Sekreta, Vice Pres-

ident; Tom Bundgard, Past President; Debbie Schroeder, Secretary;
Ron Hausch and Don Gill, CoTreasurers; Eileen Sanford, International Travel; and Alan Godwin,
Travel Director. The council is
also very proud of the several
Alpine League racers who placed
in the Championships this year.
Some of the racers took the blue
ribbon.
SDCSC club members attend the Far West Ski Convention in Boise, Idaho. Our Man of
the Year, Nick Cowell from North
Island Snowdrifters attended the
event representing the San Diego
Council. Sabine Alberti won
Council Woman of the Year representing Don Diego Ski Club.
The Joe Harris Award went to
Eileen Weiner of Don Diego.
Helen Harris was in attendance
to honor Eileen with the award,
which was named after her late
husband, Joe Harris.
Mike Sanford received the
President's Award at the FWSA
Convention for his 23 years of
service in the organization. Mike
is a true example of leadership,
team building, vision, inclusion,
hospitality towards new mem-
