Council Services is the Link
Between FWSA Councils
by Jo Simpson
Vice President - Council Services, FWSA

The FWSA Vice President, Council Services, together with the presidents of the nine
FWSA member councils, manages programs and initiatives that benefit our clubs - the grassroots of FWSA. We have a talented and involved group of council presidents and program
chairs.
Council Services oversees the following programs and committee chairs: Club and Council Communication and Outstanding Club Awards, Councils' Man and Woman of the Year
Recognition, Charities & Our Community Recognition, and Family and Youth Involvement.
The recognition that the club and council awards provide are a great vehicle for clubs to recognize their hard working volunteers. Our committee chairs strive to provide quality competitions that will stimulate clubs to enter.
The Charity & Our Community Service Recognition, chaired by Sigrid Noack, highlights
the good work our clubs and councils do to benefit their communities. Our councils and clubs
provide an amazing amount of support to local and national charities. The considerable charity
and community work of FWSA clubs is further detailed by Sigrid on pages 48 - 49. A yearly
club and council charity awards program honors clubs and councils who have done outstanding charity and community service work. The top scoring clubs and councils are invited to
provide displays of their good work at the Annual FWSA Convention.
The Councils' Man and Woman of the Year program invites councils to honor an outstanding
man and woman from their member clubs by sending them to the FWSA Convention to be
honored, and to compete for the FWSA Councils' Man and Woman of the Year recognition. Sheri
Parshall is the new chair for this program and will be taking over the 2018 competition. We
want to thank Gene Fulkerson and Donn Bryant before him, for their years of dedicated service
to the program. The 2017 council candidates and the FWSA winners are highlighted on pages
38 - 39. We are grateful to Big White Ski Resort for their sponsorship of this program over
many years.
The Club and Council Communications and Outstanding Club Awards saw significant changes
in the application and judging process that greatly increased submissions this year. Paul
Vlasveld and Cindy Krupp used their substantial technical skills to design a simplified submission and electronic judging process within a few short weeks for the 2017 submissions this
spring.
The Family and Youth Involvement Program is seeking a new focus after closing out the
successful Skin Cancer Prevention Program.
The mission of Council Services is to provide our hundreds of FWSA ski clubs with tools
and information to enhance their success. We welcome ideas and feedback from club members
and those who are reading this publication, who would like to have more information about
our FWSA Council Services programs. Please contact me at jo_simpson@sbcglobal.net. I look
forward to hearing from you. ss
