The Consultant - Q1 2009 - (Page 11) Foodservice Consultants Society International news SPEC SHEET briefs More Good News from Beijing Speakers' Spotlight is the organization which arranged for Richard Worzel to present the closing keynote address at FCSI's Beijing conference. In keeping with the theme of the conference, the organization decided to do something special. “To thank you, we have partnered with Kiva.org, the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to an entrepreneur in the developing world. Kiva.org's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.” In FCSI’s honour, Speaker’s Spotlight has extended a loan to the following entrepreneur: Asif Qakhramanov: Bilasuvar, Azerbaijan. And they added, “We greatly appreciate your continued trust, support and confidence, and look forward to the next opportunity to work together.” FCSI Loses a fine Fellow There are few FCSI members who didn’t know and admire Leif Torné, FFCSI. Born in Stockholm, he was educated at Hasselbacken hotel and restaurant school in Stockholm, at Schweizeriche Hotelfachschule in Luzern, and at the Schweiz School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University in the U.S.A. He worked as a kitchen consultant for more than 40 years, beginning with an architect’s office, Tore Ahlsén Arkitekter, in Stockholm, then moving on to work in the hotel business for many years. He eventually became a kitchen consultant at one of Sweden’s leading companies, Bogestedt and Forestam where he worked for five years. After moving to Alingsås, he was made responsible for the kitchen planning office at Electrolux Storkök, a position he held for 20 years. In 1987, he started Leif Torné Consult AB and during the course of the next 18 years, he managed more than 80 hotel projects, until his retirement in 2006. For many years he was chairman of SKBF, a catering consultant’s association in his native Sweden. With great heart, he tried to lead this group into the future and to join FCSI. Indeed, Leif was a founder member of what has now become the Europe Africa Middle East Division of FCSI. In 2005, Leif was made a Fellow of FCSI, an achievement of which he was very proud. His interests included sailing, skiing, waterskiing, diving and other sports. But it’s probably his virtuosity with the clarinet for which he will be best remembered by FCSI members who had the privilege of watching the talented musician join in with the band at a jazz bar. He loved music and was warmly welcomed everywhere he went; his reputation was widespread and many may not know that he and his band released several successful CDs. A Swedish colleague, Peggie Ulle, sums it up for us all, “We will remember him playing for us with joy.” FCSI –The Americas News Beginning in January, Association Headquarters, Inc.
