oday, the Aero Wireless Group is at the forefront of
smart pole technologies with its CityPole™ solution.
The company is currently on track to install more
than 300 CityPoles™ throughout Denver for Verizon
Wireless and developing multiple new projects nationally as
wireless operators and municipalities are expressing interest in
the group's solution to densifying small cell wireless networks.
However, before looking too far into CityPole's future, it
helps to look at where the company has been.
In 1998, CEO Jim Lockwood established Comptek in
New York City to develop and fabricate structural products
to reinforce civil infrastructure. In 2002, Lockwood established Aero Solutions with minority shareholder Paul J.
Ford & Company, to reinforce macro cell tower structures
using Comptek's patented reinforcing solutions. As antenna collocations grew in number over the 10 years that
followed, Aero Solutions played a major role and completed
over 4,000 turnkey tower reinforcing projects across the
U.S. using their tower strengthening solutions. By 2012,
the demand on the wireless industry to provide increased
data capacity was increasing rapidly, fueling the demand for
new low profile infrastructure solutions that support many
small cell antennas closer to one another. Lockwood knew
it was increasingly important for Comptek to develop new
products to enable wireless operators to densify their urban
networks and focused on a smart pole solution, CityPole™.
As a member of the Innovation Technology Council
(ITC) for the Wireless Industry Association's HetNet Forum, Lockwood learned the market opportunity quickly and
chaired industry white papers on the topic of small cells on
pole facilities and their importance in building out the next
generation of high speed wireless services. HetNet focuses
on bridging the communication gap between the requirements of the wireless industry and those of municipalities.
