The Official 2008 RVers Guide to Florida - (Page 42) REGION 3 Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties B eautiful stretches of coastline, a diverse cultural calendar, pristine nature areas and major attractions await visitors to West Central Florida — the GREATER TAMPA BAY AREA. The region’s two northern counties, Hernando and Pasco, are part of Florida’s “Nature Coast.” Much of this area is rural, with thousands of acres having been set aside as national, state and county parks and preserves. The tongue-twisting and beautiful Withlacoochee, Homosassa, Pithlachascotee, Weeki Wachee and Chassahowitzka rivers traverse this region, offering scenic byways for boating, canoeing and fishing. Crystal-clear springs attract visitors from afar to swim, snorkel and scuba. At nearby Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, descend into the amazing “fish bowl” to see thousands of fish as well as manatees. The Withlacoochee State Forest, straddling parts of two counties, features ravines and abandoned rock mines in Hernando and pine forests and cypress ponds in Pasco. More than 100 miles of hiking trails wind their way through the forest. The mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs have captivated crowds for more than 50 years. The park also features a wilderness river cruise, exotic bird show and petting zoo. 2008 FRVTA RVers GUIDE TO FLORIDA Region 3 Tampa Bay Area 42
