Foundation for the NIH, Annual Report 2007 - (Page 2) YEAR IN REVIEW Initiatives funded and facilitated by the Foundation for NIH in 2007 addressed a broad range of public health challenges through both traditional and innovative approaches. Whether employing practiced scientific methods in new fields of study, applying the latest technological tools to intractable problems, or focusing experts of varying perspectives around a common goal, these partnerships represent new paradigms on the path to discovery. While each program is unique in its structure and strategies, a feature common to all is unprecedented collaboration—collaboration that will stretch resources further and, ultimately, advance human health. Some highlights from 2007: THE BIOMARKERS CONSORTIUM The consortium launched its first two projects—studying whether FDG-PET imaging can measure the effectiveness of certain drugs against two types of tumors: lymphoma and lung cancer. So far, the foundation has raised $6.43 million from nine private-sector donors for these projects; augmenting the $3.75 million in public funds and in kind contributions committed by the National Cancer Institute. GRAND CHALLENGES IN GLOBAL HEALTH This unprecedented research initiative, which aims to overcome scientific obstacles to solving major health challenges of the developing world, registered further progress on several fronts, including: severe malaria in children, chronic infection, nutritional value of crops, insect control, and others. The partnership funds 43 promising projects drawing on resources of more than $436 million. Discovery Society The Discovery Society is the foundation’s principal way of involving many supportive individuals in the work of the National Institutes of Health. Funds raised from generous individuals provide the necessary platform for the support of the programs on these pages: major collaborative and multidisciplinary projects that would be too complex or risky for any one organization to undertake alone. In this age of declining government resources, gifts of every size play an especially important role in advancing the life-saving work of NIH. Members of the Discovery Society are listed on page 26. 2 | 2007 ANNUAL REPORT
