Foundation for the NIH, Annual Report 2007 - (Page 20) CRTP: Clinical Research Training Program After a decade in action, the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) for medical and dental students has become a highly successful, widely recognized model for fellowship programs around the country. As many as 30 students a year come to the NIH campus for an intensive 12-month clinical or translational research project. The participants, known as fellows, are paired with senior NIH physician-scientist mentors on projects matched to their interests. Fellows attend clinics, see patients in wards, and participate in interactive group forums with leading NIH researchers and one another. They work with a principal investigator in both the laboratory and at the bedside to learn about translational research, the transformation of basic research into patient therapies. The fellowships, equally funded by Pfizer Inc and NIH, may be extended for a second 12 months, depending on the support of the sponsoring NIH institute, availability of funds, and the student’s home institution. CRTP 10-YEAR REUNION— MARCH 2007 With the aim of cementing the long-term relationship between NIH and CRTP fellows, the Foundation for NIH organized a reunion for all program alumni. The fellows represent some of the nation’s best and brightest young physicians and scientists whose careers have been shaped significantly by their experience at NIH. The reunion offered rich opportunities for interaction amongst all fellows, their mentors, and advisers. Panels led by distinguished NIH scientists and a day-long seminar highlighted recent developments in clinical research at NIH and throughout the nation. “Pfizer’s partnership with the NIH is based on mutual goals outlined by the Roadmap— innovation and excellence in science. Our support of the CRTP over the past 10 years advances our mutual goal of developing the clinical researchers of the future. We are also excited about participating in the biomarker and genomic collaborations which are key to unlocking new scientific discoveries.” —Joseph M. Feczko, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Pfizer Inc Bernard Osher Foundation/NCCAM Practitioner Research Career Development Award In September 2007, Weidong Lu, MB, MPH, LicAc, was named the first recipient of the Bernard Osher Foundation/NCCAM Practitioner Research Career Development Award. Dr. Lu is a licensed acupuncturist who also holds a clinical degree from Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, equivalent to a U.S. clinical doctorate. The award represents a seven-year partnership between the Foundation for NIH, The Bernard Osher Foundation, and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Up to three awardees may be selected each year. This award will give Dr. Lu time to focus his research skills through course work, tutorials with his mentors, and execution of two of his own pilot research projects to test the effectiveness of acupuncture for head and neck cancer patients who develop dysphagia (trouble swallowing) after chemoradiation therapy. His long-term goal is to become an established independent research investigator in complementary and alternative medicine. 20 | 2007 ANNUAL REPORT
