Foundation for the NIH, Annual Report 2007 - (Page 23) Endowments at the Foundation for NIH Through endowment gifts, donors ensure perpetual support for a variety of research and educational initiatives at the Foundation for NIH. The annual investment income generated by an endowment fund covers program expenses, while the principal remains intact to ensure future funding. EDNA WILLIAMS CURL AND MYRON R. CURL ENDOWMENT ROBERT WHITNEY NEWCOMB MEMORIAL FUND The Edna Williams Curl and Myron R. Curl Endowment, established in 2007, supports multiple sclerosis research at the National Institutes of Health. JOHN LAWS DECKER MEMORIAL FUND This permanent fund was established in 2000 by the Newcomb family. Through a charitable remainder trust, the Newcomb Memorial Fund endows an annual lecture in neuroscience as well as internships for high school students at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). NORMAN P. SALZMAN MEMORIAL FUND During his lifetime, Dr. John Laws Decker strived to connect research communities around the world to exchange information and promote the acceleration of important scientific research. Mrs. Lucille Decker and the Decker family created the John Laws Decker Memorial Fund in 2003 to establish an annual lecture memorializing his dedication to education and communication about science. The endowment and the lecture it supports stand as a permanent and fitting tribute to Dr. Decker’s memory. JOHN I. AND ELAINE K. GALLIN ENDOWMENT Dr. Norman Salzman’s family, colleagues, and friends remember the legacy of this noted pioneer in molecular biology through contributions to the Salzman Memorial Fund, which supports an annual symposium and award in virology. The half-day symposium addresses key topics in virology and immunology and is attended each year by researchers, medical students, and health professionals. STEPHEN E. STRAUS ENDOWMENT The Gallin Endowment provides amenities at the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge for family members who accompany loved ones participating in clinical trials at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. The endowment was established in 1999 in anticipation of the opening of the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge in 2005. GLAXOSMITHKLINE ENDOWMENT FUND Established by Bernard and Barbro Osher in 2006 in honor of Dr. Straus, this endowment funds the Stephen E. Straus Award, recognizing the outstanding research accomplishments of a young scientist in the field of complementary and alternative or integrative medicine. HARRY AND JEANETTE WEINBERG ENDOWMENT AT THE EDMOND J. SAFRA FAMILY LODGE The GlaxoSmithKline Endowment supports programs and activities for families staying at the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge, including services that help residents stay in touch with employers and loved ones. SALLIE ROSEN KAPLAN FUND FOR WOMEN SCIENTISTS IN CANCER RESEARCH The Weinberg Endowment was created in 2002 and supports the operation and maintenance of the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge—ensuring that guests are provided a comfortable home away from home for years to come. The Kaplan Fund, established in 2000, provides annual support for the Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowships for Women Scientists in Cancer Research. These post-doctoral fellowship awards are given annually to one or more outstanding woman scientists at the National Cancer Institute. NORMAN P. SALZMAN MEMORIAL AWARD Two researchers were honored with the 2007 Norman P. Salzman Memorial Award. Adriano Boasso (mentored by Gene M. Shearer) was the first awardee. Audray Harris, the second awardee (mentored by Dr. Alasdair C. Steven) received a special recognition. The memorial serves as a living legacy for Norman P. Salzman, who was a mentor to many young scientists. It is awarded to an outstanding post-doctoral fellow and his or her mentor for innovative and creative research, and it is a model for encouraging and recognizing scientific discovery. More than 150 researchers, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, and health professionals attended the presentation and related symposium. The Foundation for NIH deeply appreciates Mrs. Lenore Salzman’s vision and leadership and thanks her for the role she has played in the program’s outstanding growth.
