Foundation for the NIH, Annual Report 2007 - (Page 26) Donors by Recognition Group The Foundation for NIH enables the private sector to support research and scientific discovery at NIH in many ways. Corporations, private foundations, associations, individual philanthropists, and the general public — everyone interested in improving human health — can become a partner in particular initiatives by making a restricted gift or by contributing to support NIH’s work in general. As outlined in the preceding pages, restricted gifts support many and varied initiatives, including complex biomedical research programs; educational efforts such as fellowships, lectures, and symposia, that train scientists and help them build their careers; and specific laboratories or areas of scientific research at NIH. Unrestricted gifts support core operations and enable the foundation to develop emerging program areas and new partnerships. LIFETIME GIVING SOCIETY The Lifetime Giving Society recognizes individuals for their generous commitments of $100,000 or more overtime. The foundation is very efficient in managing the private sector’s investment. Of every dollar spent by the foundation, 97 cents is used to support programs, and just 3 cents for administration and fund-raising. Indeed, in 1997, the foundation was the top-rated charity among the 593 health charities rated by Charity Navigator, which evaluates organizational efficiency, capacity, and overall financial health, and the third highest rated among all 5,327 non-profits evaluated. The following donors and partners made gifts or pledges during the 2007 fiscal year (January 1–December 31, 2007). The Foundation for NIH makes every attempt to list donors according to their wishes.
