GLOBAL HEALTH SECURITY INITIATIVE The United States for the first time hosted this annual meeting, and the foundation was a lead sponsor. Formed in 2001, the GHSI aims to protect public health and security by improving preparedness for and response to terrorist and health threats. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael O. Leavitt and seven European, Asian, and North American counterparts addressed potential threats, risk management, and network and communications issues. GAIN GENETIC ASSOCIATION INFORMATION NETWORK This project completed genotyping of more than 18,000 samples for six major common disease studies already underway and granted funds to researchers to analyze the results. The work focused on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, type I diabetes, major depression, psoriasis, schizophrenia, and bi-polar disorder. The foundation raised $26 million in cash and resources for the network. ADNI ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE NEUROIMAGING INITIATIVE The study completed enrollment and is monitoring 823 participants for normal, mildly impaired, and Alzheimer’s disease-related brain changes. Test results and images are being cataloged in a comprehensive database that will spur further research. The foundation has raised nearly $25 million for this effort. The Foundation for NIH: A Unique Catalyst for Public-Private Partnerships The Foundation for NIH was established by the U.S. Congress and began operations in 1996 to serve as a non-profit catalyst for public-private partnering in support of research of the National Institutes of Health. That unique role affords the foundation unparalleled interaction with key personnel at NIH and at the same time the entrepreneurial mandate to involve a broad range of public and private entities, including foreign partners and for-profit institutions. To date, the foundation has raised more than $410 million and facilitated over 50 projects. A flexible infrastructure, combined with disciplined scientific, administrative, and program-management capabilities, allows the foundation to create innovative, successful partnerships that benefit all parties.
