Focus Magazine - Summer 2011 - 7

FROM THE PRESIDENT Michael Capaldi

The pace of innovation and change has clearly accelerated.

’m a pragmatist by nature which means I’m usually not the earliest adopter of new ways of doing things, but I’m also not the last. It has always allowed me to observe a new idea or concept in action before committing to it, while letting others help to re ne it so that all of the kinks are worked out for my adoption. To a pragmatist, ease of use is critical. In the training and learning function, we walk a ne line between being open to the possibilities of new methods for educating and dismissing new ideas because our conventional wisdom tells us that “it simply cannot work here.” is is especially true in the highly regulated industries in which we operate. In the mid ‘90s, technology was evolving and began to in ltrate the learning space. At that time it was a choice as to whether or not it could be leveraged as a training delivery method, most likely as e-learning. Today, it would be almost impossible to plan, conduct or follow-up a learning intervention without the use of some technology. Not only are we dependent upon it, but it truly enables us to o er higher quality education to our clients and do it in a much more e cient manner.

e pace of innovation and change has clearly accelerated and we need to be prepared to quickly evaluate new approaches and technologies so that we don’t miss out on the potential they may o er. Being open to the possibilities is not simply reacting to the hype; rather it’s a mindset that allows us to view them in a collaborative manner that doesn’t dismiss their potential. In this issue of Focus, you’ll read about some great examples of this openness. ese stories from your fellow members reveal the bene t of risktaking and perseverance in the face of challenges. Social learning, virtual product training and mobile delivery are prominently displayed for your bene t. As you review these examples, ask yourself how you would have responded to the original idea if presented to you rst. Be honest in your response as it will tell you a lot about your own openness to possibilities and whether or not you’re ready for learning innovation within your organization. In the meantime, I hope you’ll continue to evolve your thinking for the pursuit of continuous improvement in our profession. As always, SPBT provides a forum for you to access new ideas through collaboration and sharing with other members and our preferred industry partners.

Michael Capaldi is President of SPBT and Associate Vice President, Institutional Affairs at Sano . E-mail Michael at Michael.Capaldi@sano .com.
