Tea is reported to treat everything from headaches to depression — health issues that seem to be on the rise in the dreary winter months. Especially green tea. hot, healthy tea written by > Jessica goodale nakedcity One Cup Tea Set THE SPICE MERCHANT Why green tea? According to Frank Horbelt, owner of Zoomdweebies Tea Bar, green tea is rich in catechin polyphenois, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant. “Green, oolong, pu erh and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant,” said Horbelt. “What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are withered and immediately dried, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized.” What does this mean? It means drinking green tea is reputed to help with certain medical conditions, including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, infection and impaired immune function. “But, I’m only 25,” you say. Well, in addition to drinking tea as a preventative measure, there is even new evidence that green tea can help dieters. Ah, good to know. And while it is not as widely known as green tea, other teas have healing affects as well. Black teas have anti-stress agents and help with alert relaxation. You can drink tea at work, reduce stress, but still stay awake during those long planning meetings. “Oolong tea contains polyphenols,” said Jasmine (I’m not kidding, that’s really her name) of Chelmsford Tea & Gifts. “They act as antioxidants and help with inflammation.” “And white tea is also great,” continued Jasmine. “White tea contains even more polyphenols than other teas because the leaves are so close to their natural state. And it’s rich in fluoride — a great preventative measure against plaque. So grab a cup of hot tea this winter, and drink to your health.
