Naked City - Volume 1 Issue 1 - (Page 33) >muse A layman’s guide to staying warm during December’s Final Friday. If you’re feeling a little down-n-out about all the holiday treats you ate, the perfect solution isn’t far: join the Final Friday Gallery Crawl in December. Gaining steam the last few years, Final Friday is an opportunity to get out and see what’s hot in Wichita’s world of art. And just so you don’t freeze your little buns off, I’m giving you a guide — my suggestions — of where you ought to go. Far from comprehensive, I urge you to be a deviant, do it backwards and explore things on your own. Don’t be shy to take a glass of wine and chat with folks who are standing around. an older, more sophisticated crowd, although you burgeoning young artists might do well to listen in and learn. COMMerCe sTreeT If this is your first month out, don’t be too disappointed, but much of Commerce Street is sleeping. Typically featuring four or more galleries, The Fisch Haus (that’s right, the German spelling) is the only one officially open. They will be featuring multimedia works by Eric Schmidt, a board member at the gallery. There’s sure to be a live band. It’s worth dropping by for the atmosphere. f i s C h h A U s s T U d i O 524 S. Not only does the Square boast the city’s most expensive gelato machine and a great sushi restaurant, it’s also home to City Arts and Wichita State University’s Shift Space Gallery. While City Arts typically features multiple exhibits by well-established local and visiting artists, which bring in the older crowd, Shift Space features cutting edge work by current students and faculty members at WSU. The close proximity of these galleries means you’ll stay toasty in your heavy coat, while the juxtaposition provides a nice glimpse of where art has been and where it might be going. After you’re done viewing these galleries, hop on the Q-line trolley, which will take you — free of charge — to every destination. C i T y A r T s 334 N. One block west, if it’s not too cold to make the jaunt, you’ll find The Frame Guild. Boasting 50 local and regional artists, Gallery XII — a fine arts collective — certainly has a unique, homegrown flare. While not your traditional folk art, there are plenty of cute and functional items that would make great gifts for your friends.
