So, if you asked Shiney, six years after his bout with cancer, he would probably tell you that his priorities have changed; now, he is more serious about his art and pursuing a lifestyle that makes him happy. Using an assortment of found objects such as reclaimed pallet lumber and building materials, as well as leftover commercial paint and inks, Shiney creates works that are just as much an experiment in process as they are about the painting itself. “A lot of the process is making the machine. But I often have an end product in mind when I am building it, so it is a double kind of goal,” said Shiney. A common subject matter among Shiney’s pieces is the circle. He has been painting them since his debut show, at the Firehouse Gallery, in May 2003. His most recent contraption, pictured above, includes a paint dispenser on a movable arm that extends over a motorized easel. The easel is attached to a bicycle tire, which creates concentric circles over a canvas made of reclaimed lumber. The speed at which it spins gives Shiney control over the final product. Lately, Shiney has been taking his art in new directions, trying his hand at a series of pieces that incorporate paint-soaked rags and free-form elements. Be sure to look for his newest work, a collaborative installation with Christopher Gulick and Tom McGuire, which debuts February 2008 in the Living Room, at the Wichita Art Museum.
