When she finds out that no one kissed me at midnight, she insists on making up for it. We make out against the kitchen counter. She’s a really good kisser, and just a little too into it. Later, she’ll have sex in the bathroom and we won’t be able to get her out. The taste is remarkable. Without the sugar, it’s smooth and spicy and herbal. Like all absinthe, it’s anise-flavored, so there’s a taste you might call black licorice, but they’re not actually the same thing. When the sugar is mixed in, it mellows even more. The sweet mixes with the spice. 2:45 Megan is drunk-dialing over the music from the ceiling. She won’t realize that she called these people for an entire week. Still, I don’t completely discount absinthe’s effect on the mind. Plenty of people avoid tequila because they think it makes them go crazy. Absinthe has the mystique of being the liquor that takes you to creative places. Maybe it does. Just be careful where you leave your laptop if you plan to binge. 2:30 My friend Megan and I sit on the couch upstairs watching the last handful of dancers. Megan gets sarcastic when she drinks; she’s been narrating the party for me. Two drunk kids are practically having sex on the dance floor. At times they are the only ones dancing. They are oblivious to us 10 feet away, watching them. They’re really hot, but I don’t say this to Megan; she thinks they’re hilarious. Absinthe is probably best known for it’s hallucinogenic reputation. Everyone knows someone who’s tried it and gone on some outrageous trip. I don’t doubt that these people had hallucinations, but it wasn’t from the absinthe. No one has ever even proven that thujone, the chemical in question, even causes hallucinations. We’re hiding back in Jimmy’s room because we’ve had enough. Outside, the chaos continues. 3:30 Mercifully, it ends. Most of us have been ready to tuck it in for an hour. We venture outside. Jimmy has a long kitchen counter. It’s a petrified forest of empty glass bottles.
