DougLas You’ll never find this bar unless you’ve already been there, which is part of the appeal. Small enough to feel like a refined house party, Lucky’s boasts a strong personality, a sense of Wichita cool. With ample seats at the bar and plenty of room around the pool table, you’re sure to see someone you know. For more intimate conversation, choose a candlelit booth. The jukebox is eclectic with varied selections that include Le Tigre, coLLecTive souL and Tom WaiTs. There are frequent D.J. nights but never a live band. PBr is $1.50 nightly, begging the question: Why shouldn’t you call Lucky’s home? ThE aLibi Room—919 E. DougLas Typically more quiet than Lucky’s, the aLiBi room is a good place to go with a larger group of friends. The jukebox is one of the best in town, representing local bands such as sPLiT LiP rayfieLd, sPiriT of The sTairs and BLack gasoLine, as well as early ’90s favorites including the Pixies, smashing PumPkins and fugazi. DougLas With an enormous selection of beer and the tastiest yam-fries this side of West Africa, the Anchor has just about anything you could ask for aside from comfortable seats. Not that it isn’t ironic to be sitting in church pews while sipping a glass of the finest liquor, but there is something to be said for comfort—at least until you get too drunk to feel your tushy. The anchor has a comprehensive menu, including a homemade vegetarian burger. It is a good place to meet folks from the office for lunch or dinner. kELLy’s iRish Pub—917 E. DougLas There doesn’t seem to be much Irish at this pub, but that doesn’t detract from the den-like atmosphere it has conjured up over the last seven years. Sunday through Thursday you’ll find 2-for-1’s, so bring a friend and share with them! If you’re going out alone, no shame in that.
