Naked City - Volume 1 Issue 3 - (Page 39) >spin the need to read T h e D r e s s L o D g e r Shari Holman The Dress Lodger is engrossing historical fiction. And, better yet, has both a plague (cholera) AND prostitution. Can’t beat that combination in a book. The book tells a tale set in cholera-stricken Sunderland, England, around 1831 and is based in fact. Fifteen-year-old Gustine– the dress lodger–is a potter’s assistant by day and a prostitute by night. Grave-robbing and a nameless little son with a horrible birth defect all come together to make Gustine’s life difficult. P r i D e a n D P r e j u D i c e Jane Austen Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife: PriDe anD P r e j u D i c e c o n T i n u e s Linda Berdoll Pride and Prejudice is the love story of the handsome Mr. Darcy and lovely Elizabeth. It has been made into countless movies and plays and the tortured tale of their love ends much too soon. The story of their love is continued in Linda Berdoll’s wild, rather naughty, but completely engrossing novel. In it, the Darcys begin their married life as one of the happiest, most in-love couples imaginable. It could be too sugar sweet, if not for a bit of Austen-esque turmoil thrown their way (and the bawdy sex scenes). M o b y D i c k Herman Melville a h a b ’ s W i f e Sena Jeter Naslund Pair the classic whale tale, Moby dick by Herman Melville, with the contemporary ahab’s Wife, by Sena Naslund. This very long, epic work of historical fiction, honors Melville’s Moby dick and uses it as a looking glass into early-19th-century America. This novel pays tribute to Melville, creating heroines from his lesser characters, and to America’s literary heritage in general. Read both and see the classic story from both sides. M y s i s T e r ’ s k e e P e r Jodi Picoult My sister’s keePer examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child’s life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My sister’s keePer, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity. e v e n c o W g i r L s g e T T h e b L u e s Tom Robbins Perhaps the ultimate love story. The almost flawlessly beautiful Sissy Hankshaw is a small-town girl with big-time dreams, and she’s going to Manhattan to make them real. Her quirky personality and penchant for hitchhiking lead to bigger adventures with a cast of characters who fall for her and want her to succeed in whatever she does. b e a T P u n k Victor Bockris Here, accompanied by dozens of unique photographs, are the very best of Victor Bockris’ infamous interviews, essays, and observations on the stars of downtown Manhattan in the 1970s and 1980s. The internationally acclaimed biographer Bockris was there as a witness, friend, collaborator, and co-conspirator. Some of the stars were founding members of Beat or Punk, others were just passing through. But all of them-rockers, rebels, artists, and intellectuals-revealed more to Bockris than they did to any other writer: Allen Ginsberg, Richard Hell, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Debbie Harry, William Burroughs, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Terry Southern, Martin Amis, and Susan Sontag. Bockris’ conclusionthat Punk owed the Beats a big debt and that the Beats were in turn re-animated by the Punks-is argued from the perspective of someone who was in the thick of it, and who loved every minute of it. The no-nonsense guiDe To TourisM Pamela Nowicka This guide demystifies the often invisible impacts of global tourism, one of the biggest industries in the world, from labor conditions to development by stealth, to the role of elites and the cultural impacts on both the visitor and the visited. It also takes in themes such as the gap year and the role of travel and vacations in Western cultures, and examines the “happy smiling faces” syndrome and asks whether this is just a reworking of old colonial relationships. This hard-drinking, chain-smoking approach to partying inevitably leads to some punishing and enlightening ruminations on life and everything that goes with it. hookeD: PiraTes, Poaching anD The P e r f e c T f i s h G. Bruce Knecht Hooked is a story about the poaching of the Patagonian toothfish (known to gourmands as Chilean Sea Bass) and is built around the pursuit of the illegal fishing vessel Viarsa by an Australian patrol boat, Southern Supporter, in one of the longest pursuits in maritime history. This modern pirate yarn has all the makings of a great true adventure tale and is also an exploration of the ways our culinary tastes have all manner of unintended consequences for the world around us. nakedcity 39 nakedcitymag.com > volume 1 issue 3 nakeDciTy's firsT-QuarTer reaDing LisT http://nakedcitymag.com
