Women's Focus - December 2007 - (Page 68) focus on F U N sugar cookie ORNAMENT Making sugar cookie ornaments is a traditional, low-cost way of decorating a Christmas tree. A newlywed on a budget, I made them tied with red ribbons for my first tree. I placed each cookie just right, then stood there admiring the effect. My puppy admired it with me. He walked right up to the tree and took a big chomp out of a decoration. I guess he wanted a little taste of Christmas, too. This Sugar Cookie Ornament looks good enough to eat with her delicate sparkles and sewn frosting, but it is a no-calorie version made out of felt and crochet thread. She’s made from two layers of cream felt with lightly “browned” edges sprinkled with ultrafine glitter. Make her to adorn a tree or decorate a package for that special person. Getting Started Trace the figure and heart patterns onto the paper and cut them out. Use the disappearing ink to trace two figures and a heart shape onto the felt. As you use each color of paint, mix a small amount of textile medium into it according to directions on the bottle. Turn the felt figures over and paint a 1/8” edge using the flesh tone paint. Sprinkle glitter onto the wet paint. Only paint a few inches at a time so it won’t dry before you get the glitter added. Continue until the edges of each figure are painted Square of cream felt Delta Ceramcoat acrylic paint: Fleshtone, Rosetta Pink, Black, and White Textile medium W o m e n s F o c u s • w w w. F o c u s O n . c o m • D E C E M B E R 2 0 0 7 When all the paint and the glue have dried, edge the heart with a satin stitch using the darning needle and the white crochet thread doubled. It’s best not to tie off with a knot as it will leave a bump. Instead, catch a little of the fabric in back to hold it. The ends will eventually be glued down so they won’t come out. With the painted edge as a guide, sew a stem stitch to create the white frosting look on the front of the figure. Add 8” of crochet thread to the top of the back figure and tie for hanging. Carefully spread glue over the inside of the back figure to join the front and back figures together, making sure the thread for hanging is draped out of the top. Glue the heart in the center of the front figure. Allow the figure to dry. Loop crochet thread three to four times, then sew the loops together in the center with the white thread. Sew the three rondelle beads to the center of the loops, then sew to the head as shown. Your sugar cookie is now ready to sweeten your tree. Materials and glittered. Blush the cheeks lightly on the front figure with the flesh tone paint. When painting the eyes, I used the end of a large brush to dot the eyes on but you can brush it on too. You can use either a paintbrush or a toothpick to draw the mouth and the tiny eyelashes. If you want to try something similar, practice on a piece of felt first to see which will work for you. Let the figures dry then paint smaller cheeks with the pink paint over the flesh tone. Dry, and then use the white paint to dot each cheek three times with the toothpick. Dot the eyes as well. Apply glue to the front of the felt heart and add glitter. If you do this over a sheet of paper, you can save the extra glitter and return it to its container. Ultra-fine glitter Size 3 white crochet thread White sewing thread 3 clear 6mm rondelle beads You will also need: paper, pencil, tacky glue, paintbrushes, darning needle, needle, toothpick, scissors and disappearing ink pen. ~Thresa savage harney 68 http://www.FocusOn.com
