Women's Focus - January 2008 - (Page 32) Abs from the Bring Back the retro YOU with a Personal Trainer It’s January. At this time every year, the general population will show more of an interest in fitness than they will demonstrate for the next eleven 11 months combined. The New Year seems to be the time to say good-bye to last year’s fitness foul-ups and hello to a new and improved lifestyle. We resolve to bring back the person we used to be; the girl with thinner thighs, a toned tush and a resting heart rate that would make professional athletes raise an eyebrow. She’s in there – we just need to dig her out. However, it may require the assistance of a professional to break ground. A good personal trainer can provide motivation. They know how to keep you working out at a level that will help you achieve your goals. If you have a hard time exercising on your own, a personal trainer can keep you in check. Nothing will get you to the gym quicker and make you work harder than having someone there to push you and make you pay (in more ways than one) if you don’t show up. An experienced trainer will also make sure you work out safely and effectively. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched hard-working gym-goers perform exercises with poor form or use weights or machines incorrectly. A personal trainer will show you the proper technique and stop you from wasting energy on inefficient workouts. i n d u l g e y o u r s e l f • Wo m e n s F o c u s . c o m • J A N U A RY 2 0 0 8 PAST gear again. If you are new to working out, a good personal trainer will show you simple moves that allow for varying intensity and challenges down the road. As you get stronger, you may experience plateaus in your fitness plans. A trainer will add more challenges, intervals, resistance and weight training to kick-start your plan into high If you have specific needs, a personal trainer is an excellent guide. You may be a card-carrying member of the biggest gym in town, but if you haven’t told them, no one at your big gym knows about your chronic knee injury or that you are training for your first 5K. A personal trainer can help you achieve goals faster and more efficiently than chugging it out on the treadmill on your own. If you feel a personal trainer might be just what you need, take these steps to find the right one for you. Make sure he or she is certified. There are governing bodies for trainers just like many other professions, so make sure your pick has the credentials to back up his or her work. Does he/she have liability insurance? If your trainer is employed at a gym, this should be covered by the company. Independent contractors need to have their own insurance. Does your trainer look the part? You can’t respect a trainer that is out of shape. Look for someone who is fit and leads a healthy lifestyle, while motivating you to do the same. Above all, make sure you like your trainer’s personality and style. After all, you’re not doing this just to lose weight or get in better shape. The goal is to feel better about yourself. If you are looking to lose weight, a personal trainer can provide you with specific program goals for body fat reduction, weight loss or just toning up. There’s a reason people hire trainers to drop the pounds – it works. According to Cedric Bryant, PhD, chief exercise physiologist at the American Council on Exercise (ACE), studies have shown that personal trainers can help people stick to their exercise routines more effectively than they would on their own. Having someone to answer to is the key to staying on track. ~ Lisa TaranTo Ace Certified Fitness Instructor and Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant 32 http://WomensFocus.com
