Women's Focus - January 2008 - (Page 41) focus on F U N Knightley In keeping with this month’s “retro” theme, we’ll look at three books with a link to the past. BOOM! Voices of the Sixties Reading Hot off the presses and garnering a lot of press as well is Tom Brokaw’s BOOM! Voices of the Sixties, published by Random House. This best-selling author revisits the tumultuous ’60s as we approach the fortieth anniversary of the epic year of 1968. BOOM! chronicles the ’60s by providing stories of those affected by, and effecting change during that decade. Profiles include the likes of musician Bob Dylan, actor Warren Beatty, cartoonist Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury fame, women’s activist and writer Gloria Steinem, conservative politician Pat Buchanan and several dozen others. The book does not shy away from the controversies of the era, including the Vietnam War, racial tensions and feminism. Reviews of this book are good and it sits near the top of my “to read” stack. Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me Wonderful Tonight George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me by Pattie Boyd with Penny Junior, published by Harmony Books. It is fascinating that Ms. Boyd was married to Beatle George Harrison and then married his close friend, guitar legend Eric Clapton. A true-life scandal in the lives of the rich and famous, this book is just too juicy to pass up. Ms. Boyd was an accomplished model in her own right prior to meeting Harrison and seemed to be at the center of the swinging ’60s in London. While the writing is not going to win any literary awards, Ms. Boyd’s account and experience is an entertaining, insightful and easy read. Valley of the Dolls Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann, published in 1966. When this book was initially released it created a sensation and, according to Wikipedia, is considered one of the most commercially successful novels of all time. The book chronicles the lives of three women who become friends and get involved in show business after WWII. The pressures of fame, not to mention maintaining their beauty and figures, prompts them to begin relying on barbiturates, or “dolls,” to get by on a daily basis. Compared to the antics of starlets currently plastered on the covers of entertainment magazines today, this book seems fairly tame. However, when considering the somewhat innocent mindset of the ’50s and early ’60s, this classic is quite interesting, thought-provoking, and well worth your time. ~Linda KnightLey i n d u l g e y o u r s e l f • Wo m e n s F o c u s . c o m • J A N U A RY 2 0 0 8 41 http://www.prairieview.org http://WomensFocus.com
