Women's Focus - January 2008 - (Page 5) letter from the E D I T O R We had a “blast from the Past” putting together this “retro” WomensFocus issue. It was a lot of fun looking at the old trends and fashions that have become new again. Some of us remember these eras from living through them, others with a nostalgic reverence that makes these times seem simpler, happier and less troubled than today. Children played outdoors, called adults Mr. and Mrs. and joined Little Leagues. Mothers were waiting at home after school with an afternoon snack; ready to take their children to dance class or Boy Scouts. The television and video game addictions hadn’t happened yet; we only had a three channels and Pong. Teen-agers would plan sock hops, stop at second base and hang out at the soda fountain instead of exposing themselves to danger on myspace.com, I have to admit to donning the rose colored glasses myself on occasion, but I also think it’s important to take them off and see the reality. They were the best of times, they were the worst of times. African Americans were fighting for their civil rights, women had low expectations and limited opportunities. We need to view the past from the history channel, not Nick at Night. The Cleaver, Nelson and Brady families never spoke about the social issues of the day; not because times were perfect, but because it wasn’t acceptable to discuss unpleasant subjects in mixed company. Today, everything is out in the open, help is available and victims are not alone. It still warms my heart to watch Lassie rescue Timmy from whatever scrape he had gotten into; but wouldn’t it have been better if he’d had his own cell phone to call for help? The key is to learn from history, not glorify it, or repeat it. So, let’s take a look back and enjoy the view. I love the clothes. I love the furniture and would love to drive a sporty ’57 convertible with the top down and a filmy white scarf flowing out behind me. But return to those times? No thanks, baby; we have come a long way. Photo by Darren Decker.
