Women's Focus - February 2008 - (Page 22) focus on A R T S A Night of “Love doesn’t make the world go round; love is what makes the ride worthwhile.” - Franklin P. Jones There is no reason to save your entire bag of romantic tricks for one day a year. I have searched high and low in our fair city and have come up with enough diverse entertainment, dining and cultural experiences to see you through a month of love! So why not plan a memorable night on the town – or a cozy night in – anytime? Men, take note: Women love getting flowers. You can set the tone for the entire evening by having a bouquet of roses (which can be pricey in February) or her favorite blossoms delivered during the day. Not sure who to call? Try Tillie’s Flower Shop and have her bouquet designed by the winner of the Teleflora National Design Challenge, Larry Strong. His “Delightful Romance” design caught the judges’ eyes with its combination of Stargazer lilies and Freedom roses - beautiful! The Cottage Garden is another wonderful resource and Kay can include a surprise or small token from her variety of gifts. Wichita is extremely blessed to have so many fine and romantic restaurants. Anything with amazing food and quiet ambiance should do the trick. Cafe Bel Ami, Larkspur, Uptown Bistro, Cibola, Chester’s Chophouse, Yia Yia’s, Red Rock Canyon, Scotch and Sirloin or the newly opened Eaton Steak House are all excellent choices. If you want to arrive in style, call 262-LIMO and Executive Limo Service will pick you up in a stretch, complete with a bottle of bubbly. Their deluxe package includes a $35 credit toward dinner at Cafe Bel Ami, Tommy’s, Yia Yia’s or Scotch and Sirloin; as well as transportation to the Hawthorn Suites and a ride home after breakfast the next day! For a really special evening, dress to the nines and attend a performance of the Wichita Grand Opera. Love is always at the heart of the plot and February’s offerings of La Boheme and Giselle are excellent. Another option would be the Wichita Symphony’s presentation of the Classics, featuring renowned pianist Stuart Goodyear. If film is your forte, check out the Orpheum Theater’s film series featuring the 1965 classic Dr. Zhivago. At only $5 per ticket this may be your most economical choice, and the grandeur of the old theater still speaks to the romance of a bygone era. If you’re looking for lighter entertainment, you can enjoy drinks and appetizers while watching the rocking ‘60s musical soap opera Suds at Cabaret Oldtown. The Crown Uptown Dinner Theater will feature a legacy to Johnny Cash with Ring of Fire, the Broadway musical comedy revue. Another way to dine during a show is to visit the Old Town Warren Theater or the balcony at the Warren East. You can order anything from popcorn to crème brulee while taking in a first-run flick. Before ending the evening, stop at Oeno Wine Bar for chocolate fondue and a glass of merlot, or try one of the 163 flavors of martinis at Mort’s. After an evening out, have your driver take you to a romantic getaway right here in the city! Whisk your love away to an impressive 1888 Scottish castle on the river, the Historic Campbell Castle Inn. You will feel as if you are in another world when greeted with the opulent elegance of this unique bed and breakfast. Many rooms are equipped with two-person Jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces. Sleep in luxury and feel like true royalty as you awaken to a delicious hot breakfast. If you prefer a more contemporary retreat, try the Homewood Suites by Hilton at the Waterfront. This all-suite hotel is cozy and elegant at the same time. Breakfast is included with your room. While a night on the town can be fabulous, never underestimate the power of a night in! Set the mood for your special evening with a written invitation - nothing fancy, just something Cupidinspired. Plan a romantic dinner with a visit to S & S Meats, where they have succulent shrimp or lobster tails in addition to Sterling Silver beef. Pick up a bottle of champagne or sparkling cider so you can toast your love. Don’t forget the dessert. Stop by Monica’s Bundt Cake Co. or Cocoa Dolce and you can’t go wrong. After dinner, pop in a romantic movie such as the 1942 classic Casablanca and cuddle under a warm blanket. “Here’s looking at you, kid” will take on a whole new meaning! Don’t forget the candles and a fragrant bottle of massage oil to make your evening unforgettable. Romance ~Taci FasT
