Women's Focus - February 2008 - (Page 24) focus on T R A V E L Schowalter Village Retirement Community Campus (701 S. Main) Our first stop (no doubt) was the WATER’S EDGE RESTAURANT which is located in the HESSTON HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER, part of the SCHOWALTER VILLAGE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY campus. Now, I know what you’re thinking but this is no ordinary retirement community; it is a microcosm of activity that is truly “intergenerational.” The WATER’S EDGE serves a delicious buffet at breakfast and lunch. We stuffed ourselves with Belgian waffles, eggs, bacon and hash browns as we admired the view of a snow-covered lake teeming with Canadian geese. The dining room is open to the public and offers a Saturday “Couple’s Night” with a special romantic menu. With its huge indoor pool, exercise classes and workout equipment, The HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER is the small-town version of a YMCA. It attracts young and old alike, thus keeping with the theme of a multi-generational facility. As we ventured further into the building, we discovered the Village’s own artist in residence, Paul Friesen. The arts program is another unique aspect of this campus. When Friesen was ready to sell his home and move into one of the Village’s independent living offerings, he was provided studio space where he could continue perfecting his craft. Not only does he create, he shares his knowledge with members of the larger community as well. Friesen specializes in ceramics, stone pottery and sculpture. One of his works, entitled “The Hesston Tornado,” was the result of a happy accident in the firing kiln! There is no better example of uniting the generations than SCHOWALTER VILLA (200 W. Cedar). This assisted living/nursing home facility coexists with HESSTON COMMUNITY CHILD CARE; and the magic that happens between the two is nothing short of incredible. The day care was specially built with observation windows so the residents can watch the children at play. On any given day the windows are lined with wheelchairs, as individuals enjoy the antics of the children. Some windows are actually one-way i i n d u l g e yy o u r s e l f •• W oo m e n s F o c u s . c o m •• FF E B R U A R Y 22 0 0 8 ndulge ourself EBRUARY 008 W mensFocus.com HESSTON KANSAS 24 24 ~photography by: Taci Fast http://www.womensfocus.com
