Women's Focus - February 2008 - (Page 57) BEE MINE One of the best ways to express your love is to give a handmade Valentine. There are many crafting options available to make Valentines. Besides the nostalgic doilies, there are the scrapbooking, sticker and paper sections of the store to make your designing easier. Cut a 7" x 9" piece of pink cardstock to make the base of the card. Fold it in half lengthwise. Cut an 8" x 2½" piece of printed heart paper, then trim the edges with the scissor edgers. Glue to the front center of the card. Cut a 6½" x 1" piece of white cardstock, then round the corners with the scissors. Glue to the pink cardstock, allowing an edge around each side. Cut the edge with the edgers close to the white paper, as in the picture. Glue to the front center of the card. Plan the lettering that you will be using on the front of the card to be sure that it fits. I used a mix of large and small letters. Allow space on the right side to place a bee when done. Adhere your letters to the card. To make the bees, choose a letter from the stickers to place on the back of the bees. I used the large “O” for the body and a small “V” for the antennae. Stick the four “O’s” on yellow cardstock and the four “V’s” on white cardstock. Carefully cut around them, leaving a 1/8" edge. I found it easier to use the brads if you pierce the paper with a needle first. The ends of the white heart brads are too long for the bee wings. Use wire cutters to carefully cut the ends after pushing them into the paper. Pierce the pink cardstock with the needle, push the white brads in, and cut the ends and bend inward to secure. Cut around each brad, leaving a 1/8" paper edge. Assemble each bee by gluing the antennae behind the body and the wings on the sides. The brads will slip over the top of the body while the paper point is glued behind. Stick the dotted heart brad on pink cardstock. Cut around it, leaving a 1/8" edge. Punch two holes in the front left top corner of the card. Tie a bow using the two ribbons and waxed linen. Trim the ends. Glue one bee to the top of the bow. Glue another bee to the right side of the lettering. Allow everything to dry before working on the inside of the card. Cut a 2½" x 6" piece of heart paper. Trim the edges with the edgers. Glue to the center of the Valentine focus on L E I S U R E inside card. Cut a 1¾" x 53/8" piece of white cardstock. Glue this to the pink cardstock allowing an edge around it. Edge the pink cardstock with the edgers as in the picture. Glue to the center of the heart paper. inside Plan the lettering for the inside of your card, allowing for two bees and the heart brad on the right side. Adhere the letters to the inside of the card. Glue the bees and heart to the card. Allow everything to dry. This card was designed to fit inside a businesssized envelope. You will have to carefully insert it because of the ribbon tied on the side. Use your stickers to create the name on the envelope, decorating as you wish. ~THRESA SAVAGE HARNEY Materials Cardstock (1 sheet of each): textured hot pink, white and yellow (Use scraps if you have them.) printed heart paper 8 — ½” white heart brads ¾” pink dotted heart brad i n d u l g e y o u r s e l f • Wo m e n s F o c u s . c o m • F E B R U A RY 2 0 0 8 7 16 / ” sticker letters (I used two sheets of Funky creative letters by Making Memories) 8” — 5/8” pink sheer ribbon 8” — 1/8” yellow ribbon 8” — black waxed linen string You will also need: scissors, scissor edgers, white tacky glue, needle, ruler, hole punch and wire cutters.
