Women's Focus - February 2008 - (Page 7) letter from the E D I T O R Love is in the air. My friend Lori hates Valentine’s Day. Like many people she considers it to be a holiday invented by the greeting card companies, and a general pain in the neck. Her husband is off the hook. He doesn’t have to buy her a gift, and he certainly doesn’t have one coming. For them it’s just another day. I, however, like Valentine’s Day. I think in our hectic lives – when we’re working long hours, rushing from place to place and dropping in a chair at the end of the day, it’s nice to take some time just to appreciate the people we love. A simple card, a quiet dinner and some kind words are all we really need. Gifts are great, don’t get me wrong, but that isn’t what it’s all about. The important thing is to not take the people closest to us for granted, and be thankful we have someone to love, whether it’s our spouse, our children, our parents or even our pets. Spend a little time decorating a valentine, baking cupcakes for the class party, or putting a trinket on the desk of a co-worker. Brightening someone’s day, and bringing a smile to their face, will bring a smile to your own. You can do it with a small gesture or a huge production; you choose. Just show someone that you care. As we were going to press with this issue, an opportunity for the women in our community to make a difference in someone else’s life; to show that we care, presented itself. Habitat for Humanity is organizing their 5th Women Build. This is something I have always wanted to do, and when I mentioned it to my writers, I discovered it was something close to their hearts as well. And we want you to join us. If you are interested in being a part of the WomensFocus Women Build team, please contact me as soon as possible and I will be able to tell you the day(s) we will be building. You don’t have to work a full day, half days are okay, and the folks at Habitat will supply the tools and the training. For more information, check out the article on page 13. You may even decide that you, along with your friends, family or coworkers, will want to form your own Women Build team. Either way, I have the feeling, when the home is completed, our hearts will be so full, Valentine’s Day will pale in comparison. Photo by Darren Decker.
