OC Home - August 2013 - (Page 59) Orange County Register Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 59 1 PHOTOS: PETER VALLI “Mixing things up prevents it all from becoming too on-the-nose.” KRISTI NELSON For this San Juan Capistrano sitting room, interior designer Kristi Nelson went for an understated approach when it came to referencing the equestrian community in which the house was built. “The daughter is a competitive junior rider, and the mom rides, but I wanted to incorporate all of that in subtle ways,” says Nelson. The starting point was two portraits of the clients’ horses, placed in prime position above the fireplace. Nelson went from there, using “textures and elements that you’d find in a beautiful barn.” The woven wood wallcovering on the ceiling is a nod to the wood interiors of a barn, while the linen window treatments and grass-cloth walls are all about “organic, dried-grass kind of colors.” The sofas are leather, but even here Nelson put a twist on the expected: “The frames are upholstered in worn leather, and the cushions are done in velvet.” Not that Nelson is above having a little fun. The horse bust, from Z Gallerie, “adds a playful element.
