Love touches down

ove, like football, succeeds when there’s a strategy. Villa Park native Ryan Richards, a medical sales specialist who for six seasons has served as the receivers coach for Saddleback Community College’s football team, first spied his future bride at Crossline Community Church in Laguna Niguel. Crystal Oropeza, a negotiator at a law firm who was raised in Chino Hills, remembers that Richards made her smile a lot. “I had so much fun around him,” she says. “He was a good friend.” “I had no intention of ever being just friends with her,” the winning Gauchos coach now reveals for the record. “I had
scouted her for a while.” But there was interference: Oropeza was already dating someone else when they met. When that relationship started to fade, Oropeza, 31, remembers Richards, 32, offering her his blunt assessment of the situation: “It’s because you’re dating the wrong guy.” They had already spent a lot of time together on what they call “church dates,” where a group from church would go out together for fun. So, when Richards finally asked her out, Oropeza was confused. “You mean a church date?” she said. “No, a real date,” he replied. He also let her know that, for
