In fact, your comments reinforce our desire to continually improve and expand on SLDT and the Land Development Breakthroughs’ workshops and conferences. Many developers – and some of the design team – walk around their communities with targets on their back. While there are “bad apples” in every bunch, we believe that the overwhelming majority of development professionals would choose to do the right things with their projects – environmentally and socially as well as financially – if they were presented with the information and perspective to enable them to do so – and meet or enhance their financial needs and objectives at the same time. Of course, even good developers are often vilified. Whether it is the misinformed press or a lively group of NIMBY activists, there always seems to be opposition to development – even when it is needed, wanted, designed, and proposed according to the “rules.” But, as explained in our feature story by Erica Leatham (page 14), the rules are changing. One of the suggestions for developers and professionals in our industry made by Leatham in her article is to join an organization that will provide you with comprehensive and balanced resources for the latest news, trends, and facts to help empower you in our dynamic environment. Unfortunately, despite the dozens of organizations that participate in our industry, few if any provide the advocacy and support to the whole development community – especially in the context of espousing the balanced approach to people, planet, and profit. In other words, we believe there is a void to be filled when it comes to providing a 6 July/August 2007 Sustainable Land Development Today truly balanced perspective that embraces the profit motive, supports environmentally and socially equitable efforts – and at the same time informs the public and promotes the great work that is accomplished by the land development industry. The superb projects which meet the triple bottom line approach (people, planet, and profit) that ensures sustainability go largely unrecognized and unsupported by the industry as a whole. Sustainable Urban Redevelopment In the middle of this issue is our second supplement on Sustainable Urban Redevelopment. It can be pulled out and passed along to others that may be more interested in revitalization efforts occurring in American cities. In fact, our initial supplement (in March) was so well received that we will be producing Sustainable Urban Redevelopment as a new stand-alone publication in 2008. If you want to receive it, be sure to complete the subscription card that is found within the supplement. It will also be provided at no cost – as long as the card is completed. 888-FUTURUS (388-8787) www.futurus.biz New Home While summer is always a busy time, this year has been extraordinary for us. Early in July we moved into new offices. We thought that it was important to “practice what we preach,” so we became the first tenant in an old five-story warehouse. Please note our new phone numbers and mailing address. We hope your summer ends well.
