Sustainable Land Development Today - September 2007 - (Page 19) Special Opportunity for SLDT Readers For developers who are attempting to differentiate their properties, providing a high level of technology to the units for the eventual residents is one great way to allow certain developments to stand out in a crowd. Making the option of providing technology such as fiber optics – for TV, internet, and telephone service – even more attractive is that it can be done at no additional cost. In fact, developers even have opportunities to add two revenue sources by receiving easement payments and/or establishing and managing a temporary or permanent utility. One of the best sources to learn more about these options is by attending the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Conference & Expo from September 30 to October 4 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. Realizing that developers have a unique perspective with different interests in regards to implementing a fiber optic utility into a development, the FTTH Council created specific sessions at its upcoming conference for land developers. In addition, the Council is providing Sustainable Land Development Today readers with a substantial discount to attend the conference. The following educational sessions will be held Wednesday, October 3 and Thursday, October 4 and are targeted to assist developers: I By Greg Yoko After the Build-Out: Next Steps in Marketing FTTH Once the Network is Built FTTH Finances and Economics Panel : “Making Cents of it all - Funding and Cost Drivers for FTTH” Multiservice Broadband Opportunities: New Services, New Technologies, New Business Models Making it Work Home Networking Technologies for Today and Tomorrow Government and Regulatory Panel: “Legislative and Regulatory Landscape in 2007” Structuring Wired Community: Arrangements For a Changing Regulatory Environment Standardized Planning Processes Yield Repeated FTTH Successes Everything You Needed to Know About Home Networking and Were Afraid To Ask (1/2 Day Workshop) Fiber-to-the-Home: The How To’s of Successful Collaboration for Developers I I I I I The 2007 FTTH Conference & Expo comes at a time when the number of U.S. homes receiving video, internet, and voice services over direct fiber optic connections has doubled over each of the past two years. As of March 2007, 1.34 million homes were connected to the internet via end-to-end fiber, with FTTH passing a total of 7.9 million homes. More than three dozen municipalities and local public utilities across the U.S. have built their own fiber networks. Another dozen or so are moving toward this step. These are communities that envision strong linkages between widely-available, very high-speed broadband services and a future of job growth, economic development and educational advancement that their residents want and need. In addition, as installation costs have come down, an increasing number of developers of new residential communities are wiring up their developments with fiber as they build them. They know that having a fiber-enabled home adds to its value on the market. One study commissioned by the FTTH Council – a survey of home buyers and home developers – estimated that a direct fiber connection adds about $5,000 to the price of a home. “This is a thrilling time for the fiber-to-thehome industry, as the number of FTTH subscribers has doubled over each of the past two years,” said Kathy Harriman, Chairman of the FTTH Council’s Board of Directors and Senior Vice President for EPB Telecommunications in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “Now that it has a great deal of traction in the market, fiber-tothe-home has become the point of convergence for all kinds of futuristic services and applications. If you want to get a first-hand look at where broadband is taking us, our 2007 Conference & Expo is the place to be.” Preferred pricing for the developers track (Oct 3-4) is only $800 – almost 50 percent off – which includes all day Wednesday, two workshops and lunch on Thursday. New to this year’s Expo Hall is the Home Networking Zone, featuring next-generation devices for home entertainment, security, home office and other amenities. About the Fiber-to-the-Home Council: Now in its sixth year, the Fiber-to-the-Home Council is a non-profit organization established to help its members plan, market, implement and manage FTTH solutions. Council membership includes municipalities, utilities, developers, and traditional and non-traditional service providers, creating a cohesive group to share knowledge and build industry consensus on key issues surrounding fiber to the home. Communities and organizations interested in exploring FTTH options may find information on the FTTH Council website. www.LandDevelopmentToday.com 19 I I I http://www.FTTHconference.com http://www.LandDevelopmentToday.com
