Defining success is much more difficult. There tends to be as many definitions of success as there are people defining it. Success is usually a subjective measurement and based upon an individual’s personal ideals and objectives in life. For some, it is determined by their salary. Others may use their status in a community. Many define success by the quality of life. Defining success in a development context can be equally as challenging, but is more important since multiple stakeholders are impacted. In addition, we are continuing to expand our educational events (conferences and workshops) to provide real life examples and practices to you from experts and innovators within our industry. It is also essential that participants in our industry recognize the need and importance of staying on top of changes in our industry and marketplace. Therefore, it is incumbent upon successful industry professionals to seek out the latest knowledge and experience to continue improving their business practices. We’ll do our best to bring this to you – in the pages of SLDT and in a number of new ways that we will be announcing soon. Putting Theory into Practice Many politicians, activists, educators, and others have been clamoring for years that our industry must be more conservation minded and be more environmentally friendly. So much so, that many of their initiatives have found their way into regulations. The problem, however, is that few of these ideological and theoretical concepts were ever presented or explained so that they could be implemented in a practical manner that would allow our industry to embrace them. This is/was especially true in the private development sector where a profit motive has often been ignored or shrugged off as unimportant by regulators. Fortunately, our nation’s capitalistic system and entrepreneurial citizenry has fos- 888-FUTURUS (388-8787) www.futurus.biz Sustainable Land Development Today (ISSN 1552-4728) is published by Sustainable Land Development Today, LLC 10 times a year on a monthly basis with combined July/August and November/ December issues.
