Don’t assume; take the initiative to openly discuss options with the developers—you may be surprised at their willingness to branch out. As the owner of an engineering/surveying firm, I have made it our policy that when employees return from a workshop/seminar, they are required to share the information at an in-house seminar with the rest of the staff. Vendors are also an essential part of our training. We invite them, with no strings attached, for an opportunity to share their knowledge and products. This allows us to keep abreast of current technologies and products of potential value to our customers’ projects. Within our organization the knowledge base of individual employees is used to elevate our collective corporate abilities—secrets and egos are not part of the equation. Through some of our business practices we have found that, treated in its early stages, this disease is treatable— though constantly monitoring for symptoms is necessary. Many of our customers, like subscribers to Sustainable Land Development Today, are a different breed that are constantly searching for new ways to focus on the attributes of the land that ultimately attracted them to the parcel. The design team selected should have this same passion.
