Georgia Tech Alumni - 2006/2007 Annual Report - (Page 14) ROLL CALL AT 60 REFLECTING ON GEM OF A YEAR Georgia Tech alumni continue to stand out as among the most generous in the nation when it comes to giving to their alma mater. Roll Call donations totaling $8,182,283 are testament to that generosity. The Alumni Association staff followed suit. Every employee contributed to both Roll Call and the Georgia Tech Charitable Campaign. In Atlanta and across the country, alumni and Association staffers gave of their time and talents through professional mentoring and philanthropic projects. One of the most successful examples of alumni aid is TEAM Buzz, begun on the Institute campus and adopted by Georgia Tech Clubs throughout the United States as a way to come together and reach out to communities and individuals in need through construction projects, beautification work and fundraising efforts. Roll Call is the Institute’s largest source of unrestricted funds. But, it had a modest start in 1947, when only 1,356 alumni — 7.6 percent of known Tech alumni — contributed about $22,500. Yet just a few decades later, the Roll Call program received an award for the “best sustained alumni performance” among all public-supported colleges and universities, including a whopping 54 percent participation. Bill Todd, vice chair for Roll Call, said undesignated funds are critical for the Institute. There are many opportunities that come along in a year where the president and the administration need some flexibility to respond to those opportunities, whether they be enhancements in student life or scholarships or faculty recruitment and retention. When all of the private money is designated for a specific purpose, as important as those purposes are, it is constricting not to have the ability to match funds up with opportunities that arise.” Jim Shea, vice president of Fundraising and Development, added, “There’s nothing on campus that you can point to that hasn’t been impacted in a positive way by the commitment of unrestricted dollars that alumni contribute each year.” Bill Todd and Jim Shea are pleased to share the fiscal figures from the 60th Roll Call. Todd, IM 71, served as vice chair of Roll Call for 2006-07. Shea is the Association’s vice president of Fundraising and Business Development. 14 2006-07 ANNUAL REPORT | GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
