year in review “Georgia Tech was founded on very real, practical needs to enhance life after the Civil War,” Irwin wrote in the epilogue of Ramblin’ Wrecks From Georgia Tech: A History of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, published during the 2007-08 fiscal year. “Those ideals drove Georgia Tech to select the best and brightest of students whose work ethic and motivation could achieve the goals of industrializing the South. Along the road, there have been many, many challenges, and Tech’s leadership has navigated the waters exceedingly well — in many cases, bolstered by the support of local Tech alumni. “That tradition of loyalty sets both Georgia Tech and its alumni in a category of great and notable distinction. There is not a single great American university that truly succeeds without the extraordinary leadership, advocacy, philanthropy and passion of its alumni,” he said. Georgia Tech is poised “to achieve its aspiration of ‘defining the technological university of the 21st century.’ But it will only happen with the loyalty, hard work and support of the alumni,” Irwin said. “As alumni of this great institution, we carry a a noble obligation to carry Tech forward on our shoulders as those before us have done — not for us but for the generations to come after and for our society, because, in the end, a world-class university makes the world a better place to be for everyone through education, research and economic development.” 2007-08 ANNUAL REPORT | GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 11
