introduction In March 1908, graduates of the Georgia School of Technology declared their purpose in forming an Alumni Association in a resolution printed in The Atlanta Constitution: “The object of this association is the promotion of social intercourse among the graduates of the institution, the promotion of their professional welfare and the extension of the knowledge of the school and its advantages. That we lend a helping hand to all graduates and students of the institution who come within our reach.” The Fulton County Superior Court granted the Georgia Tech Alumni Association a charter on June 20, 1908. The original mission statement read the Alumni Association was chartered to “promote the cause of technical education in Georgia and the South and to establish and maintain scholarships; to aid in the development of the Georgia School of Technology; to promote the mutual interest of the members of the Association.” Alumni Association President Joe Irwin said it’s been a century of remarkable change, “but the spirit of what this Association is all about hasn’t changed.” The Association communicates the achievements of the Institute and its alumni, maintains its traditions and engages the campus community by forming a complete picture from four separate business disciplines: Gathering and Managing Information: Optimizing technology to provide efficient, cost-effective operations in acquiring and managing data. Communication: Keeping alumni and other members of the Tech community informed about Georgia Tech and the Alumni Association. Engagement: Involving alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends in a range of professional, educational and social activities designed to promote personal and professional growth as well as a sense of community. Fundraising: Executing the annual Roll Call, Georgia Tech’s single largest predictable source of unrestricted funds. 2007-08 ANNUAL REPORT | GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 9
