Belton, associate chair in the School of Economics, in a presentation that will include discussions about rising fuel costs and belt-tightening measures. • Music Technology Research at Georgia Tech, presented by assistant professor Gil Weinberg, who will lead an audience-participatory musical performance. • The Tech Family Tree: Alumni Growing Tech for 100 Years, presented by Marilyn Somers, director of Living History, in honor of the Alumni Association’s centennial. • Advances in Alzheimer’s Detection, presented by Michelle LaPlaca, an associate professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, explaining how a device recently developed by Tech and Emory University researchers tracks cognitive abilities. • The Phoenix Mars Scout Mission, presented by aerospace engineering professor David A. Spencer, who was involved in the project and will talk about the May landing. • Let’s Talk Politics: The 2008 Presidential Campaign, presented by Kirk Bowman, an associate professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, who will discuss the candidates’ platforms. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Global Learning Center, Interim President Gary Schuster will deliver the State of the Institute address. “The State of the Institute address will focus on the progress that we’ve made and the challenges that are in front of us and how we’re going to begin to address those challenges,” Schuster says. Homecoming weekend begins with a winetasting reception from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 beneath the Chihuly glass exhibit in the College of Management building atrium in Technology Square. Perennial highlights include the Ramblin’ Wreck Parade at 8 a.m. Oct. 25 and the Alumni Association tailgate party, beginning on the Tech Tower lawn two and a half hours prior to the kickoff of the Homecoming game against Virginia.
