Alumni Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 15) Sunrise in Antarctica Captures Alumni Travel Photography Prize “Antarctic Sunrise,” a photograph taken by Bill Lakenan, IE 63, was named the winner in the places category in the 2008 Alumni Travel photo contest. The contest is open to all alumni and friends who have participated in a Georgia Tech Alumni Travel tour in the past year. Winners were announced during an August luncheon at which 2009 tours were previewed. Winner in the people category was “Inca, Past, Present and Future,” taken by Brightman Thomas, son of Lanny Thomas, EE 74, and Susan Thomas, Arch 79. “Elephants in Revue,” photographed by M.W. Barron, Text 64, won in the culture category. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, and former graduate student Jennifer Phillips, PhD BME 07, along with research technician Kellie Burns and collaborators Joseph Le Doux and Robert Guldberg, were not only able to create artificial bone that melds into softer tissues, they also were able to implant the technology in vivo for several weeks. If the technology is able to pass further test- ing, one application could be anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Oftentimes, ACL surgery fails at the point where the ligament meets the bone. But if an artificial bone/ligament constructed with these types of graded transitions were implanted, it might lead to more successful outcomes for patients.
