Alumni Magazine - Summer 2008 - (Page 12) TECHNOTES Clough Commons Board of Regents approves naming of undergraduate learning facility The state of Georgia approved a fiscal year 2009 budget that includes $10 million toward construction of an Undergraduate Learning Commons that will be named for Wayne Clough. The Board of Regents has approved the naming of a planned Undergraduate Learning Commons in honor of former Tech President Wayne Clough. The project has been in the works for nearly a decade and represents Clough’s commitment to undergraduate education during his 14-year tenure. The naming request was announced to the Georgia Tech Foundation board June 5 and approved by the Board of Regents June 11. Clough, who is an alumnus of Tech, was genuinely surprised and a bit overwhelmed when he learned that private fundraising for the commons was nearly complete, said Barrett Carson, vice president for Development. The process was put in motion after Georgia Tech’s budget request before the General Assembly was approved May 14. Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue signed into law a $21.2 billion fiscal year 2009 budget that includes $10 million toward construction of the Undergraduate Learning Commons and $6.4 million to renovate the Hinman Building. “The prosperity of the state of Georgia and our University System are inextricably linked. The state’s investment in Georgia Tech has been well placed and I am proud of the Institute’s remarkable accomplishments,” Perdue said. Dene Sheheane, Mgt 91, the Institute’s director of government relations, explained, “The overall budget increase for the University System was nearly 8 percent.
