She said the motorcyclists in the Iron Torch Ride typically covered about 450 miles a day. “We did a couple of days of 700 miles. We rode from Key West to Atlanta in one day and that was a 823-mile day. Prudhoe Bay to Key West was mapped at 6,788 miles but that didn’t include coming back to Atlanta or other little trips that we took out of the way.” A support truck with a trailer followed the motorcycles and carried the bikes that broke down as well as luggage and souvenirs acquired along the way. “When we shipped the bikes, we put most everything we were going to need on them. You really needed to be able to survive with what you had on the bike because you may not see the trailer,” Crocker said. She didn’t hesitate when asked what was the most important item to carry. “Rain gear — at some point during the day it rained every day except maybe one or two for the first couple of weeks. We really didn’t get warm until we got to Montana. We wore heated gloves and jackets while traveling through most of the Northwest.” From Montana, the fundraisers traveled through South Dakota, Nebraska, Arkansas, Tennessee and into Georgia to ride in Atlanta’s Fourth of July parade. Despite the wrecks and the weather, Crocker would do it all again because of the chance to interact with Special Olympians across the country, the friendships she formed with fellow motorcyclists and the ride itself. “Just to be able to see all the great scenery along the way on the back of a motorcycle was fabulous, the opportunity of a lifetime.” GT When Crocker reached Key West, she became the only woman to complete the ride on a Harley.
