He founded Bowen Supply Inc., which became a national distributor of building components for the manufactured housing and recreational vehicle industries. He served as president of the Georgia Manufactured Housing Association and was inducted into its hall of fame. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Tech, he was active with the World Presidents Organization and the Young Presidents Organization. He and three YPO associates met monthly for 31 years. James Robert Cary, IE 55, of Marietta, Ga., on May 9. He retired as president of E-Con Inc., a manufacturer’s representative company he started in 1978. He served in the Navy Reserve as a lieutenant junior grade and completed active duty in 1957. At Tech, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. James Eliopolo, EE 50, of Bethesda, Md., on June 2. In 1985, he retired as an engineering consultant with James Eliopolo & Associates, which he founded in 1957. He served as president of the Consulting Engineers Council of Metropolitan Washington and Washington Building Congress and as chairman of the D.C. Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. An Eagle Scout growing up in Savannah, Ga., he was a member of the state’s ROTC band and a solo clarinetist and glockenspiel player. Before attending Georgia Tech, he served in the Army in the European and Pacific theaters during World War II and was awarded several service medals. He helped found the Maryland Interclub Senior Golf Association. A member of the Washington, D.C., Georgia Tech Club, he played in the intercollegiate alumni bowling league. Mr. Eliopolo was captain of the team in 1964, when it won its only championship. Young Kenneth Gayle Jr., CE 50, of Birmingham, Ala., on May 28. After graduating from Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, Mr. Gayle began a 40year career with Ingalls Iron. He served in the Army. Henry G. Jenkins Jr., BS Arch 52, Arch 53, of Loganville, Ga., on Nov. 12. Mr. Jenkins retired from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. Canon James L. Johnson, IM 55, of Wonalancet, N.H., on June 15. A retired Episcopal priest, he ministered for 30 years. He became rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tenn., in 1972. He retired in 1989 and was later named rector emeritus. Under his guidance, the church became the largest parish in Tennessee and one of the largest in the country. He received a master’s of divinity degree from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., in 1958. He served at St. James in Macon, Ga., and as vicar of two Atlanta missions, St. Mary’s in East Point and St. Augustine in Forest Park. A member of Phi Delta Theta at Tech, he was head manager of the football team in his junior and senior years, serving under coach Bobby Dodd. Seaborn Phillips Jones, ME 55, MS IM 61, of Decatur, Ga., on June 15. He retired as vice president of Goodwin & Associates. During his career, Mr. Jones held positions with General Electric, Lockheed and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Atlanta. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in Florida before serving as an officer in the Army Chemical Corps in Dugway, Utah. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi at Georgia Tech. Richard P. Kenan, Phys 55, of Atlanta, on March 18. He retired as professor emeritus of Georgia Tech’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which he joined in 1986. Dr. Kenan earned a PhD from Ohio State University in 1962 and worked at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, for 24 years. His research concentrated on magnetism, the band structure of insulating solids, optics and integrated optics. The inventor of several integrated optical devices, he held 10 U.S. patents. He was a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and an Optical Society of America fellow. Henry William “Bill” Loard Jr., EE 57, on July 22. He was a captain in the Air Force and spent his professional career with Georgia Power. The family requested that memorial donations be made to the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team. Norris Kemp Mabry, PhD EE 50, of Marietta, Ga., on March 1. Dr. Mabry was professor emeritus of higher education at Georgia Southern University, from which he retired in 1988. He was a human interest columnist for the Statesboro Herald for 55 years. A veteran of World War II, he was in France in the Army of Occupation. After graduating from Tech, he spent nine years as a YMCA secretary. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercer University, a master’s from Georgia Southern and a PhD from Florida State. He was a member of the Bulloch Retired Educators, Bulloch County Historical Society and Scottish Heritage Society. An Eagle Scout, he was named Statesboro Citizen of the Year in 2002 and received the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award in 1990 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. Robert H. Mizell, Cls 51, of Rockville, Md., on Oct. 3. Mr. Mizell retired as a senior survey computer. Frank R. Mudano, BS Arch 51, Arch 52, of Clearwater, Fla., on July 29. A commissioner for the town of Belleair, he had held leadership positions with the Clearwater downtown development board, Upper Pinellas and Pasco YMCA, Florida Gulf Coast Arts Center and Pinellas Committee of 100. He served as president of the Florida central chapter of the American Institute of Architects and on the national board. He was a gubernatorial appointee to the Florida State Board of Architecture. William J. Penn Jr., IE 50, of Macon, Ga., on March 16. Kenneth R. Pickren, IE 58, of St. Simons Island, Ga., on Dec. 20. Mr. Pickren worked for du Pont de Nemours & Co. Reuben Rose, IE 50, of Livingston, N.J., on Dec. 7. He was chairman of the board of Kern Investment Corp. Howard G. “Bud” Stewart Jr., IM 51, of Decatur, Ga., on Feb. 22. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from Prudential Insurance Co. John W. Tatom, ME 55, MS ME 60, PhD ME 66, of Smyrna, Ga., on Jan. 9. Dr. Tatom worked in aerospace technology and taught astronomy and statistics at Kennesaw State University. Walter E. Tarvin Jr., IM 50, of Hacienda Heights, Calif., on June 8. After serving in the Navy, he attended Tech on the GI Bill. He joined the General Electric Co., where he became southern California district manager for power distribution products. He retired from the company in 1984 to found Tarvin Sales Co., a manufacturer’s agency. After retiring in 1989, he became more involved in the Navy League and the Elfun Society, an organization of GE managers. He served as senior Elfun of the southern California chapter and in 1998, was honored as southern California’s Elfun of the Year. He was Volunteer of the Year at the Industry Station Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He also served as a district communications officer for L.A. County Disaster Communications. James W. Thrasher Jr., ME 52, of Pensacola, Fla., on April 6. Mr. Thrasher retired from Mansanto Co. in 1978 and joined Wycliffe Bible Translators. He retired in 1991 after serving as a missionary in Papua, New Guinea, for more than 12 years. At the age of 29, he was a co-captain of Georgia Tech’s swim team. Mr. Thrasher also organized the first chapter of the Intervarsity fellowship on campus. John M. Tomme, ME 50, of Hampton, Ga., on May 31. He received a Purple Heart for Army Air Corps service. He moved to Hampton in 1953 to work for Southern States. Survivors include his daughter, Joan Raker, IM 65, and nephew, Philip L. Williams, Text 70. 1960s John D. Askew Jr., ChE 60, MS ChE 61, of Houston, on Dec. 26. Mr. Askew retired from Texaco Inc. Paul T. Baker, IM 63, of Marietta, Ga., on May 21. He owned and operated the Baker Insurance Agency. An Eagle Scout, he was past president of the Marietta Metro Kiwanis Club, a member and past president of the Golden K Kiwanis and was lieutenant governor of the 15th district of the Kiwanis. James Ivan “Jim” Dangar, CE 65, MS CE 67, of Atlanta, on June 6. He was the president and CEO of Dangar Consulting Group Inc. Mr. Dangar worked in law engineering for 40 years and continued to consult after his retirement. He was a member of the downtown Atlanta Rotary Club. William Jackson “Jack” Hamilton III, IM 66, of Suwanee, Ga., on July 12. On the day he graduated from Tech, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army and got married. In 1968, he served in Vietnam and received the Bronze Star. After the war, he graduated from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law and began a career in commercial real estate, forming his own companies, Capital Investments Inc. and Hamilton Commercial Realty Inc. A lifetime member of the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors Million Dollar Club, he earned the Phoenix Award for serving more than 10 years in the club. He played freshman baseball and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Georgia Tech. Richard Jarrel Hodges, MS EE 69, of Lilburn, Ga., on May 20. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2005 after an 18-year career. Mr. Hodges received a bachelor’s degree in engineering science from Marshall College in 1967 and was awarded a National Science Foundation teaching assistantship at Georgia Tech. He worked at the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station and Scientific Atlanta before joining Lockheed. He was a lifetime member of the Institute of TECHTOPICS | FALL 2007
