Dean Griffin frequently would stroll through the dormitories knocking on students’ doors to meet and interact with them. When the student opened the door, Dean Griffin would sometimes jokingly start the conversation with: “Hello, I’m Dean Griffin and I’m looking for stills.” This was always a good icebreaker — until one day the student answering the door turned pale at the comment. Of course Dean Griffin looked farther at this response. Going into the room he found a blanket hanging from the top bunk and covering the space between the bunks. Pulling the blanket aside he found a real still with a container of mash cooking on a hotplate. Another story concerns a student who owned a Model A Ford. He lived a good ways from Tech. Because of the age of his Model A, he did not feel comfortable driving it that distance. Therefore, he left it on the campus during the Christmas holiday. It so happened in the early SCOTT DINERMAN TECH TOPICS Publication No. 1062-077X Frequency: Quarterly No. of issues published annually: Four Annual subscription price: None Publisher–Joseph P. Former Dean of Students Jim Dull received this sculpture of a Ramblin’ Wreck from a student probably in the 1960s. A plaque attached to the wooden base has since fallen off and disappeared and, with the passage of the decades, Dull has forgotten who gave it to him and the circumstances surrounding the gift. He turned to the Alumni Association’s Living History program for help in identifying the sculptor. According to Marilyn Somers, director of Living History, the sculpture is bronze, not pieced-together scrap metal as once thought, and weighs more than 40 pounds. It is 9 inches high and 8 inches wide. If you know anything about the origins of the sculpture, e-mail editor@alumni.gatech.edu or give Somers a call at (404) 894-9271. a. Many did not have the funds to travel home and stayed on campus during the Christmas break. One Christmas several of these Cuban students dismantled the Model A and reassembled it in the owner’s room, where it greeted him upon his return from break. ROY A. NANCE, ME 54 Murfreesboro, Tenn.
