Tech Topics - Fall 2008 - (Page 16) THE HILL Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Tour New York City Redevelopment Sites Michael Arad, M Arch 99, designer of the World Trade Center memorial, addressed more than 50 alumni and friends of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering who toured the site and transit stations being redeveloped in lower Manhattan. Arad shared his vision for “Reflecting Absence,” the winning entry out of more than 5,000 submitted, as well as the difficult and still ongoing task of designing the memorial to pay tribute to and display the names of those who died. Jerry Hickson, EE 81, an environmental commitment supervisor for PB-URS, provided an overview of the environmental aspects and challenges of maintaining the World Trade Center construction site. School Chair Joe Hughes said, “The rebuilding of lower Manhattan is inspiring and exemplifies the importance of our profession, highlighting ways in which civil and environmental engineering makes a difference in modern urbanization and infrastructure development. It is especially powerful knowing that Georgia Tech has a place in the design and creation of this historic area.” A trip to the 45th-floor observation area of 7 World Trade Center, the only local building constructed after Sept. 11, 2001, gave participants a bird’s-eye view of the construction area at Ground Zero and the footprints of Tower One and Tower Two, which have Tech Nets Top Score on Green Honor Roll Georgia Tech is one of only 11 U.S. universities to receive a top score of 99 on the “Green Honor Roll” compiled by the “Princeton Review.” Tech emphasizes sustainability with 21 endowed chairs and 23 research centers that include significant sustainability components. The Institute also has set a goal that every student take at least one of the more than 100 courses with a sustainability emphasis. Institutional environmental sustainability programs embrace green cleaning, solid waste recycling, drought-tolerant vegetation and storm water capture and reuse. Georgia Tech received the 2008 American Forest & Paper Association College and University Recycling Award as well as the 2007-08 Green Cleaning Award presented by American School & University Magazine. The Institute also is implementing a sustainable food project encouraging environmentally responsible dining habits, like trayless dining to conserve water. The New York gathering in May was the second School of Civil and Environmental Engineering national event for alumni. In March 2007, the school hosted its first alumni outing, a tour of Hoover Dam. “These events provide a means to connect with CEE graduates across the country, meet new people and learn about new initiatives in the school and in the field itself,” said Richard C.
