Tech Topics - Spring 2008 - (Page 12) AlumniHouse Holland and Belgium offer a bouquet for senses Story and photos by Kimberly Link-Wills T houghts of Holland and Belgium likely conjure visions of tulips and windmills and perhaps cravings for chocolate and beer. There are canals and wooden shoes, of course, and cheese and waffles. But don’t overlook medieval architecture, fries with mayonnaise, Rembrandt and Rubens and the color orange. Orange? If you’re in Holland on April 30 for Koninginnedag, the official celebration of the queen’s birthday, you’ll see orange flags, banners and clothing everywhere in homage to the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange. It’s a national holiday and most shops are closed, but festivals take place throughout the country and keep the streets filled with photo-worthy activities, including competitions performed on horseback, as witnessed in lovely Middelburg. Visiting the villages along the banks of Holland and Belgium’s rivers gives travelers an opportunity to see old-world contests in a new world in which even the locals take pictures of the winners with cell phones. The Alumni Association has arranged a river cruise through Holland and Belgium this spring from April 12 to 20. There are travel company professionals along to ensure the trip runs smoothly and no one gets left behind. Last year, Thomas P.
