The annual event was organized in 1998 as a way to “celebrate, recognize and learn more about the strong leadership exhibited by the women of the Georgia Tech community.” Keynote speaker Larkin, IM 86, divisional vice president of human resources of Abbot Vascular for Abbot Laboratories, offered her top tips to leading a successful and vibrant life through her speech, “Women Leading the Way: How to Have it All or Have All You Want.” Larkin joined Abbot in 1992. Soon after, she gave birth to her two sons but her career with Abbot continued to advance. Opportunities were presented to her, she said, because Abbot, and many other companies, know that women in leadership are critical to a company’s long-term success. “Corporate America is waiting and anxious for (women) to grab hold of these opportunities and come in and make a difference,” Larkin said. Larkin said Georgia Tech taught her discipline and provided her opportunities. As a result, she formed her “Top 10 Tips for Leading a Rewarding and Satisfying Life.” (There are actually 12 tips, because she couldn’t whittle the list down to 10.) 1. Know what you want. When she first came to Tech, Larkin was a chemical engineering major. Larkin said early on she and her husband decided they were going to allow her career to lead them. The choices they have made were influenced by that decision. 3. Execute your plan. “It’s one thing to have your plan on paper and never tell people about it but you have to be comfortable telling people what your goals are, asking their opinions on what they think it will take for you to be successful and then working that plan over time,” Larkin said.
